Student Leadership

At St Kieran’s we provide leadership opportunities for our students in senior years. We believe leadership to be a valuable part of the St Kieran’s Primary School journey and as such place emphasis on the qualities of positive leadership and the collaborative approach to leadership.

Year 5 Leadership Program

As members of the senior classes at St Kieran’s, the Year 5 students are provided with an opportunity for responsibility and leadership through various initiatives. Students are given the opportunity to monitor playground resources and communicate with the school community. They attend a team building leadership camp which further develops skills in responsibility and collaboration.

Year 6 Leadership Program

The Year 6 leadership program at St Kieran’s follows a distributed and shared leadership model. This approach mirrors that of the school leadership team.The Year 6 leadership program allows all students to experience leadership in some capacity. The program consists of eight leadership teams;

  • Mission
  • Liturgy
  • Pastoral Care
  • Civics and Citizenship
  • Sports
  • Environment
  • Library
  • Technology

These eight teams cover all aspects of the school where decisions and responsibilities are required. Each team is allocated a ‘teacher mentor’ who helps to guide and implement decisions and initiatives created by the team. Leadership is demonstrated through the following ways:

  • leading whole school initiatives e.g. Clean Up Australia Day, St Kieran’s Day, Bullying – No Way Day.
  • student voice- acting as advocates for other students
  • leading Monday and Friday assemblies
  • communicating ideas to the student body
  • representing the school at diocesan and wider community events
  • assisting in school decision making processes
  • promoting St Kieran’s during school Open Days

The process begins in Year 5, whilst the students are learning about the qualities of a leader and leadership styles. Students nominate themselves for three teams and give reasons as to why they would be a great leader in this team. The staff then begins the discernment process of allocating students to the different teams. Leadership badges are distributed at the Opening School Mass.

The leadership teams are a valued part of the St Kieran’s school community and allow for students to experience a distributed leadership model. All Year 6 students are included in leadership teams and experience many opportunities to grow in confidence and self assurance.
