English is the Key Learning Area in which literacy skills are explicitly taught. At the core of the NSW English syllabus for the Australian Curriculum is the desire to develop a love of literature, to engage students in critical and reflective practices and to give them the skills and knowledge of language to express themselves with purpose and confidence.
Through responding to and composing a wide range of texts and through a close study of quality texts, students will develop knowledge, understanding and skills through the following content areas:
- Speaking and Listening
- Reading and Viewing
- Writing and Representing
- Grammar, Punctuation and Vocabulary
- Handwriting and Digital Technologies
At St Kieran’s, students are actively encouraged to think in ways that are imaginative, creative, interpretive and critical. They are provided with opportunities to explore language as a way to express themselves and their relationship with others and with their world. Our St Kieran’s teaching staff receive regular quality professional learning to enrich experiences and to cater for the diversity of interests, skills and needs of our students.
