English

English is a core element of our curriculum and we aim to foster a love of literature in our children. In English we engage students in critical and reflective practices and give them the skills and knowledge of language to express themselves with purpose and confidence.

The focus areas for each stage in the English syllabus, support students’ growing knowledge and understanding in the areas of:

  • Oral language and communication
  • Vocabulary
  • Phonological awareness
  • Print conventions
  • Phonic knowledge
  • Reading fluency
  • Reading comprehension
  • Creating written texts
  • Spelling
  • Handwriting
  • Understanding and responding to literature

At St Kieran’s, students are actively encouraged to think in ways that are imaginative, creative, interpretive and critical. They are provided with opportunities to explore language as a way to express themselves and their relationship with others and with their world.
