Dear Families

It’s hard to believe we are already at the end of Week 3! The Mathematical Assessment Interviews (MAI) are taking place today with the majority of students assessed. As previously advised, any student who was not assessed today has already been assessed or will be over the next few days.

Today I visited many of the local pre-schools, meeting the educators and promoting Open Day, which is on Tuesday 24th March. Over the next few weeks we will be working hard to promote St Kieran’s to the wider community and your assistance would be greatly appreciated. There is no better advertisement than word of mouth! If you know of any family looking for a school for their child next year or beyond, invite them to the Open Day or to one of the Learning Together playgroups that the school will be hosting this term. The Parents and Friends Association (P&F) has formed a marketing committee that will be calling upon support in promoting our wonderful school throughout the year.

The P&F has organised a Brekkie for Bushfires next Friday morning before school. It is also serving as the welcome to new families and students. Qkr! orders close later this evening, and no late orders will be accepted, so please get your order in ASAP. I look forward to seeing as many of our families as possible next Friday.

The first Family Mass is this Sunday morning at 9.30am, led by our Year 2 students and teachers. Even if your child is not in Year 2, please come and join us in this celebration of our faith and community.

Michael Gallagher
Principal

MAI

By the end of next week all our students would have completed the MAI (Mathematical Assessment Instrument).  Thank you to all the parents who booked online.  As explained in last week’s newsletter arrangements have been made with the remaining students in order to complete the test.

This type of testing is diagnostic in that it provides teachers with information about the numeracy skills and understandings the student has already acquired.  By understanding this, the learning and teaching program can be better differentiated to suit each students’ exact level of understanding so that skills can be built on and developed.

Understanding the actual “grade” given through the use of the MAI involves understanding that students move through a continuum of skill development called Growth Points.  The Growth Points are allocated across the areas of Counting, Place Value, Addition and Subtraction and Multiplication and Division.  They range from 0 – where particular skills are not yet apparent to a possible Growth Point of 6 for Counting, 5 for Place Value, 6 for Addition and Subtraction and 7 for Multiplication and Division.  There are “benchmarks” for the level of achievement a student should have at the start of the school year and if the student is below that level then they are considered “vulnerable” in that particular area and require differentiated support to develop their skills and understanding.  These areas are all at the very core of mathematical understanding and it is these skills that can then be applied across other strands of Mathematics.

Should you wish to find out what your child’s MAI result was you can ask the teacher at the Parent Teacher Interviews which will be held before the end of Term One.

Information about the Parent Teacher Interviews will be made available over the next few weeks.

Religious Education

“Prayer is an encounter with the mystery of God where we are invited to join in a relationship with God”
"Prayer and Liturgy Resource” Catholic Education South Australia

Catholic Schools give opportunities for students to:
Learn about prayer in the Catholic tradition
Listen and respond to God
Embrace the beauty and richness of prayer
Develop skills for personal and communal prayer

As part of our School Improvement Plan, SIP, teachers and students are reflecting upon and experiencing the many forms prayer can take. In addition to the traditional prayers of the Church students will be engaging with Scripture based meditation and contemplation. Students will also be examining their day through the eyes of prayer with the EXAMEN prayer. https://www.ignatianspirituality.com/ignatian-prayer/the-examen/

Parents can assist by practising prayer at home. We encourage both formal prayers and prayers that spring from the heart. There is a plethora of www. sites that discuss prayer with children for you to draw upon.

Linked to the newsletter are the Traditional prayers of the church that students unpack and pray at St Kieran’s, plus the parish prayer.

This weekend Year 2 will participate in the Sunday 9.30am Mass at St Kieran’s. All members of our school community are warmly invited to attend.  We thank the Year 2 parents for their support of the children and for providing hospitality on the day.

Yours in Religious Education,
   Mrs Kerrie Wetzlar

Valentine's Day 2020

CAN YOU SPARE A PAIR!
For the past number of years we have been supporting the Wayside Chapel in their efforts to give dignity to the homeless by offering them a shower and clean underwear at their centre.

They have chosen Valentine’s Day to raise the profile of this gift giving and we at St Kieran’s have chosen the month of February to support this initiative by supplying new undies (any size but predominantly adult male XL) and donating them to the Wayside Chapel. They go through more than 100 pairs of undies each day. Hard to believe, isn’t it?
What better way to show loving and caring!
Maybe this Valentine’s Day you can find it in your hearts to
SPARE A PAIR!“

So, throughout the month of February we will have a box outside the office area that new undies can be placed inside ready to send to the Wayside Chapel.

The generosity of the St. Kieran’s Community is always astounding so, if you can assist, that would be awesome.

Many thanks in anticipation of your support.
Wendy Rose, Karen Hughes, Nick Labone and the Mission Team.

Book Club

The current issue of Book Club was sent home this week.  Orders close Saturday 15 February.

His U12 Boys Sydney Northern Beaches Breakers team played 7 games to reach the semi finals and won to progress to the finals. It was a close game but they upheld their title of being undefeated and won Gold against Sydney University Lions.

Lachlan was named the Most Valuable Player. Congratulations Lachy and to all the Breakers boys!

So please put Friday 20 March in your diaries - 6pm onwards kick off and 7.30pm at Ashiana.

Of course a few kids left St Kieran’s last year and are off to new schools, however our Curry Night has an alumni, and old dads are more than welcome, and in fact, encouraged  to come along.

All new Kindy dads are especially invited.
Any questions please let me know.  Look forward to catching up,
