St Kieran’s embraces the rich, international history and cultural diversity of Manly Vale and provides a second language program in Italian in accordance with the NSW K-10 Italian Syllabus.
The students in Years 3 – 6 participate in lessons once a week that provide language learning experiences in the four areas of reading, writing, listening and speaking through varied and diverse activities that cater to all learners.
Our specialist teacher uses a variety of resources to create structured yet dynamic lessons that expose students to the many different elements of language learning from theatre skills, singing and dancing to simple text analysis, and varied traditional language activities. Students participate in an annual Italian concert performance which highlights their many skills and talents and everyone has an opportunity to ‘shine’.
Students gain increasing understanding and accomplishment in the Italian language and foster an appreciation for history, arts and culture and engage with the linguistic and cultural diversity of the world and its people. At St Kieran’s we support contemporary research that the learning of any language improves literacy skills in our own English language and provides many cognitive benefits such as critical thinking and improved memory.
So why Italian specifically? Studies in Italian can touch on an endless range of topics from our western civilization and through its shared Latin origins with English, quite simply – it’s one of the easiest languages to learn!
So, forza! Come and hear one of our students report today’s weather in Italian or observe them adding and subtracting in Italian! It’s quite fantastico!
