Dear Families

The new playground is due for completion today, possibly with a few minor finishes next week. The playground will be named in honour of Mrs Terri Paterson, the previous principal of the school who passed away at the beginning of the year. Access to the playspace will occur once all safety checks have been completed.

Next Monday is Remembrance Day and as has been the tradition for our students in the older grades, they will walk to Manly Dam for the memorial service which will begin at 10.45am. Illyra G in Year 6 will give an address on behalf of our school. Parents and friends are welcome to attend.

As we head into the hotter weather, there is greater need for sun protection. Students are regularly reminded to wear a hat, sunglasses if they wish and to drink plenty of water. Parents are encouraged to apply sunscreen in the morning and to provide sunscreen that can remain in the child’s schoolbag for re-application during the day.

St Kieran’s has a procedure for contacting class teachers. If you need to speak to the teacher, I ask that you contact the school office to arrange a time. In the case of emails, please send a message to the school email address which will then be forwarded to the teacher.

There have been a few “near misses” on Condamine Street with traffic of late. Parents, I ask you to reinforce with your child/ren road safety procedures, especially for those students who walk to and from school and those who ride bikes (Year 6 only).  The school has also received two formal complaints this week from drivers and neighbours attempting to use King Street in the afternoons.  We ask parents to please ensure they are being considerate and driving safely; including adhering to traffic laws.  We will be monitoring the situation and asking Council Rangers to attend in order to supervise this potentially dangerous situation.

The school disco is on tonight in the parish hall. As always, it should be a fun event for the students. Thank you to the organisers for all your hard work and preparation.

Semester Two Reports

As outlined a few weeks ago in the Newsletter, teachers use a variety of assessments in order to get a clear picture of student achievement.  Currently, teachers at St Kieran’s are finalising assessments and preparing for report writing.  These reports are summative in that they are an indicator of progress for the year.

This year, the reports will be available to parents on Friday 13 December.  There will be further information to follow regarding how to access the reports as this year they will be available only through Compass.  The teachers are entering data onto the reports through Compass and as such we’ve had to make some changes to the terms used in both the EFFORT grades and in the ACHIEVEMENT grades.

The EFFORT grade is about the dedication or commitment to work demonstrated by the student.
  • Our EFFORT grades will change from:
  • Commendable to Outstanding
  • Working Well to Commendable
  • Works with Encouragement to Satisfactory
  • Needs Encouragement to Needs Improvement
It is still basically four graded levels ranked from the highest rating to the lowest.

The ACHIEVEMENT grade is the summative result of the child’s academic progress.
Our ACHIEVEMENT grades will change from:
Outstanding to Extensive
  • High to Thorough
  • Sound will remain as Sound
  • Basic will remain as Basic
  • Limited will change to Elementary.
These ACHIEVEMENT grades are based on the NSW Common Grade Scale and when reading the explanation that goes with each of the grades, it is easy to see why the changes work well.  See below how the grades are reflected in the explanation.

Should you have any queries about our reports or should you require further clarification, please contact me at school.

Enjoy the weekend….

Christmas Carols Friday 6 December 6pm - in the School Grounds

Thank you to the Kindergarten parents who are helping with the organisation of our Christmas Carols this year.  After consultation and consideration of many aspects of planning, including WH&S, the following is an outline of the event to be held on 6 December.

The canteen will not be open this year. It was introduced a few years ago only as a trial and an evaluation regarding the opening of the canteen highlighted that it caused a lot of problems including, children not returning to sit with their parents and children spending a long time lining up at the canteen causing them to arrive late for their song.  A large amount of rubbish created by the items sold at the canteen required extra clean up at the end of the evening and there was an issue with left over stock that was not sold and needed to be stored over the Christmas break.  It would appear that encouraging families to bring their own picnic baskets for the event works best.

An additional complication for this year is that the school band plays for the arrival of the families and due to the work that has occurred in the playground they will be unable to use the kindy sails area.  They will be playing on the concrete area near the canteen as it is convenient for the students carrying instruments to and from the hall.

There is no car park drop off.  We would like to encourage families to park their car and walk into the playground with their children.  An evaluation of the events last year showed that we had a lot of unaccompanied children running around the playground and carpark while parents parked the car. This is dangerous.  There will be no supervision in the car park for people to drop off children or equipment and drive off to find parking.   As much as possible, we want parents to enjoy the evening with their families and not be on too many duties.

Limited parking will be available in the car park.

For safety reasons, Santa will remain on the first-floor verandah area of the school.  Those of you who were there last year will recall how dangerous it was when Santa moved down the stairs.

We look forward to an enjoyable and happy event with our very special St Kieran’s community as we move into Christmas celebrations.

Yours in Religious Education,
Mrs Kerrie Wetzlar
