Dear Families

This Sunday’s Gospel reading tells us about Jesus comforting his disciples as they anxiously wait after the Last Supper for what is to come. “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me” (John 14:1). Once again, a relevant story for what we may be feeling at this time as we move towards a partial return to school. I understand the challenges the past few weeks have thrown at our community and I sincerely hope we all feel the support that we offer each other during this time.

This morning was supposed to be our Mother’s Day breakfast and liturgy. It would have been a beautiful morning, for what is always one of the highlights of the school year. However, there will be time when we return where we will unite as a community and celebrate all that we are grateful for, most notably our mothers! Happy Mother’s Day to our fantastic mothers and thank you for all that you do.

In the letter sent home on Wednesday afternoon, we outlined arrangements for the partial return of students next week. Some points to remember are:
  • The preferred option for arriving and departing school is via the drop-off/pick up drive through using the top gate.
  • If you park and walk, meet your child/ren at the canteen gate, waiting outside, keeping the appropriate social distance (please do not mingle). Alternatively, organize to meet at the Gordon St gate.
  • Consider parking in Gordon St or nearby to alleviate the congestion in the church car park
  • Let your child/ren know the arrangements for the afternoon before school so that the teacher can make sure they are in the right place at the right time.
  • If you decide that you would rather keep your child at home on the designated day, please advise the school office via email or phone.

We appreciate your cooperation with these new arrangements. We will keep you updated with changes as they occur.

If you haven’t had the opportunity to view the website, take a moment to visit The Parent Hub COVID-19 which has information on HBL, fee relief and FAQs amongst other information.

God bless

ANXIETY AND HOPE
"An anxious heart weighs a man down, but a kind word cheers him up.” Proverbs 12:25
As we face growing fear and anxiety due to the Coronavirus pandemic, God is ALWAYS our source of protection, strength and peace during unknown times.

How is your hope? Does it bounce back after being hit? Does it cause you to doubt when you lose hope in a situation?

The Scriptures offer hope and encouragement. One just needs to pause and think about the message offered, but remember to ponder look long enough to find the message.

So do not fear, for I am with you;
    do not be dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you;
    I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. - Isaiah 41:10

God knows that we all struggle with finding and holding onto hope.
“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” Matthew 6:34

This so true. As we interact with the busyness of each day we have no time to worry about tomorrow as it’s all happening today.
“Tell everyone who is discouraged. Be strong and don’t be afraid! God is coming to your rescue…” Isaiah 35:4

Quite possibly the God who comes to our rescue will not arrive on a thunderbolt from heaven. There is however a greater possibility that when God arrives to help us it will be in the form of a friendly, positive word from a colleague, a cooked meal or gift from a family member or nursing care from a doctor or nurse. We glimpse God in those around us.

This train of thought prompts us to ask ourselves:  To whom do we offer a glimpse of God?

Premier's Reading Challenge

With more and more students staying at home now and public places closing in reaction to the coronavirus, families are finding themselves with a lot of time together at home. This is the perfect opportunity for all children to challenge themselves in the Premier’s Reading ChallengeThere have been some changes to the rules since April 15 so please check the link.

All students have their own personal log in which the teachers gave out a few weeks ago. Once logged in they can check if the books they have at home are on the booklists. I find it is more accurate to use the actual booklist checklists than the general search option. Students can search for a book using title, author or category. The student site is a very useful tool too.

Once a book is completed it is preferable to enter it straight away onto the student’s online reading record. This will encourage students to keep reading as they see their personal list grow. Younger students will require an adult to help log their books.
At present, it is quite difficult to access hard copies of books but we are able to access some very good online eBooks.

Sacramental Program Update for parents with children in Year 2 and Year 3

Due to government restrictions and social distancing protocols still in place all planned Children’s Sacramental Program meetings will be postponed/rescheduled until further notice: This means the:
  • Sacramental Program Information Sessions for parents of children in Year 2 scheduled for Tuesday 5 May or Wednesday 6 May are postponed;
  • Enrolment for the 2020/2021 Program scheduled for Tuesday 19 May is postponed;
  • Confirmation Sessions for Parents scheduled for Tuesday 16 June or 17 June are postponed;
  • Celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation on Saturday 15 August will be rescheduled by the Bishop’s Office;
  • Celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation for children in Year 3 will be rescheduled;
  • First Communion Sessions for Parents with children in Year 3 scheduled for Tuesday 12 May or Wednesday 13 May are postponed;
  • Celebration of First Communion in June will be rescheduled.
Parents of children in Year 3 please note that we are planning to complete the full program this year and parents of children in Year 2 please note we are planning to open enrolments later in the term.

These challenging times of the coronavirus have called for different approaches in how parents engage with their children. The parish is exploring alternative ways we may be able to accompany and engage with our parents in the preparation of our children for the sacraments which may include online registration/enrolments and preparation. Parents will be kept up to date in the coming weeks.

Please contact me at sacraments@northharbourcatholic.org.au and on 0408 866 521  if you have any questions or need clarification on the above.
