Dear Parents

To say that the cancellation of our Mother’s Day breakfast and liturgy this morning was disappointing would be an understatement! The kindergarten students were so looking forward to sharing the liturgy with the school community. In the meantime, we will send a video home today of the kindergarten students singing to our mums. Our plan is to share the liturgy with our parents at a morning assembly soon. Many, many thanks to the P&F and other volunteers who organised and served the breakfast this morning. We have an amazing group of supportive parents!

200 years of Catholic Education

Catholic education today is taken for granted, as one of many options available to families in Australia. However, 200 years ago most Catholics could not afford an education and it was up to people like Mary MacKillop (St Mary of the Cross) and other religious to provide for the poor. It is upon the shoulders of these "giants” that today we have a world-class Catholic education system. A celebration of Catholic education will take place across the country on Monday 24 May, the same day as the athletics carnival. St Kieran’s will be celebrating the occasion on this day with a small representation and then later as a school. More details will follow in the next couple of weeks.

Values Survey

CSBB has produced a survey asking all stakeholders within the system to answer a series of questions around values. The survey was sent home on Monday, and I would ask if you have 5-10 minutes, take time to respond. Thank you in advance.

Cross Country

Congratulations to all our competitors who took part in the Northern Beaches Cross Country at Rat Park on Wednesday. Twenty of our competitors will be travelling to Fagan Park for the next level of competition later this month.

Postponed Meeting

The information meeting planned for last night will go ahead next Thursday evening at 6pm in The Hub. One of our local high school principals will also be present. This is an opportunity to hear the benefits of completing a primary education in the one school.

New Families

This term we welcome five new families to the St Kieran’s community. Welcome to the Hatfield (4B), Rault (4W), Bye (3W), Raap (2B) and Press (2W) families. We hope you settle in quickly and make new friends soon.

Thank You

Many thanks to Ms Bombardieri and the other members of the school leadership team for ensuring the school ran smoothly in my two-week absence.

Youth Mass

Please consider joining the Youth Mass to be held this Sunday evening in the church. There will be great music and participation from many young members of the parish. Remember to wear a mask.

Cocktail Evening

Excitement is building for the Cocktail Evening coming up on Friday 28th May. This is an event that will bring the St Kieran’s community closer together after what has been such a disrupted period in our lives. Talk to your friends and let us get as many of our community together for what should be a wonderful evening together.

Happy Mother’s Day

We wish all our mothers, grandmothers and caregivers a happy and special Mother’s Day this Sunday. We hope you are spoilt by your children and have a well-earned rest during the day.

God bless.

Mathematics

This week, I have continued to work with students in Stage 3 by co teaching with the 5/6 group and Miss Williams.  This is part of a co teaching program for Numeracy planned to ensure that by Term 4, I will have worked will all classes and all students as we research and investigate the methodology behind EPMC (Encouraging Persistence Maintaining Challenge). Co teaching is yet another way to professionally develop our skills as teachers.  It allows for collegial discussion and observation around practices that are designed to strengthen teaching and learning, ensuring optimal outcomes for the students.

Challenging mathematical tasks require the students to:
  • plan their approach
  • process multiple pieces of information
  • choose their own strategies
  • spend time on the task and record their thinking
  • explain their thinking, justifying their solution to others.
This approach ensures that students engage in building connections between mathematical ideas.  It also means that as part of a “sense-making process”, students learn to develop fluency in how they represent their thinking.  Getting the right answer without being able to explain, prove or justify the strategies doesn’t demonstrate real understanding.  When students engage in describing or representing their thinking they engage in the personalised interplay between internal thoughts and images and external signs and symbols that demonstrate conceptual understanding.

Our aim is to develop confident and capable mathematical thinkers.

Have a great weekend.

Religious Education

VINNIES WINTER SLEEPOUT
At St Kieran’s we employ the use of the “Service Learning Model “also called the Head, Heart and Hand model in order to encourage students to learn through service.

Key components of this model include the use of our Heads, to gather and gain knowledge of the facts, then our Hearts, to think about the problem through the eyes of the gospels and finally our Hands, to do something about the situation.

Stage 3 students will be offered the opportunity to hold a mini Vinnies Winter Sleepout in the school playground on Friday 4 June. Between 5. 30pm – 7.30pm students will be offered a cup of soup for their dinner. Participants can bring a sleeping bag. Students will perform odd jobs around the home in order to raise funds for Vinnies Winter Appeal. They can also bring blankets to be donated to the Winter Appeal. The whole school community will support the Stage 3 Sleepout by bringing in donation of warm clothing, blankets and warm socks.

Parish Youth Mass this Sunday Evening
Our school community is warmly invited to the Parish Youth Mass this Sunday evening at 6 pm. Music suitable for the youth of our parish is planned.

Yours in Religious Education,
     Mrs Kerrie Wetzlar
