Dear Parents

Parent/Teacher Interviews have been taking place throughout the week, bringing with them a great sense of relief with the fact that we can finally meet face-to-face. Zoom meetings and phone calls have allowed for a similar reconnection. School reports and interviews this year have taken place under challenging circumstances, namely after a period of home-based learning, ongoing COVID restrictions and uncertainty with what the future holds. Despite these pressures, we look to the future with optimism as we work in partnership at making the world a hope-filled place for our children. Thank you everyone for following our COVID-safe procedures when visiting the school during the Parent/Teacher Interviews.

The School Advisory Council is compiling a survey that we intend to send home next week. Keep an eye out for more information.

Next Wednesday we begin our first Learning Exploring Active Play session, LEAP into Learning, for students starting school in 2021. There are still a few spaces available for any child starting school next year, no matter which school they will be attending. Once again, I encourage you to extend this invitation to any family friend who may have a child beginning school in 2021.

A reminder that the Catholic Schools Office is offering fee relief to families who may be experiencing ongoing financial hardship. Even if you have received some support but continue to experience financial difficulties, please contact the Fee Liaison Unit at the CSO on 9847 0728 or email schoolfees@dbb.org.au

Tomorrow is the feast day of Australia’s only born saint, St Mary of the Cross. Mary MacKillop founded the Sisters of St Joseph, an order that started many Catholic schools across the country. The order worked primarily with poorer families in educating the young. Mary’s attitude was always of forgiveness and respect. Today the sisters continue her work with those in need in our society. Many people pray to St Mary of the Cross when they have special intentions.

I ask you to keep the Cole family in your prayers after the passing of the children’s grandfather overseas. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this very difficult time.

We have a tentative date for a modified athletics carnival which we plan to hold at Millers Reserve on Friday 28 August.  We will inform you of arrangements closer to the date.

God Bless
Michael Gallagher
Principal

Teachers, parents and students have been busily participating in Parent Teacher Interviews over the past week and they have been a great opportunity for parents to connect with school, particularly since 2020 has been such an unusual school year in many ways.

The students in Years 2-6 are joining in and contributing to the interviews. Our belief about how students learn is based on the premise that they benefit when given the opportunity to reflect on their learning, make decisions and set goals for future development.

The teachers across all grades, nurture and develop this process for the children as part of their day to day learning, through the use of questioning, rubrics, checklists and by giving the children opportunities to set goals based on their own self-reflection. By inviting students to participate in the Parent /Teacher Interviews they are then given the opportunity to articulate their reflections and share them with their parent/s.

Our approach at St Kieran’s embraces the idea that students need to feel personally committed to a goal they set and they must have a belief that they have the capacity to achieve it. By structuring opportunities to reflect on past learning, then based on that reflection, set future goals, our students develop ownership of their learning which results in a greater personal investment by the student in their education.

Have a good weekend,

    Marisa Bombardieri
    Assistant Principal

Religious Education

Our sincere thanks to Fr John Sullivan for presiding at class-based Masses. This week Year 4 prepared for, and celebrated, a class Mass in the Library. Congratulations to the students for their lively participation in a scriptural play that became our gospel reading.

Next week Fr John will be visiting our Year 3 students to show them the vessels used in Holy Communion and answer all their questions about the Eucharist. Good luck Fr John.

Please remember our Year 3 students, their parents and teachers who continue their preparation for First Holy Communion. Students are participating in the Parish Sacramental Program complimented by their eucharistic module of learning at school.  The parish foyer has a selection of religious gifts suitable for First Holy Communion.

Yours in Religious Education

Kindergarten Geography

Kindergarten had fun in Geography this week. They went on a treasure hunt using a map and clues to visit special places in our school. They went to the canteen, shared space, Year 4, the library, visited their buddies in The Hub and saw Mr Gallagher and Mrs Postle in the office.

Year 2 Robotics

Year 2 were super keen and excited to have their yearly session of Robotics last week. They were able to use the skills they had previously learned to make two robots, a fan and a moving machine with sensors. It was amazing to watch the students work collaboratively to build and code their robots and watch their coding algorithms work. Lots of crashes between robots were avoided with their sensors and coding!

PRC - Only 3 weeks to go!

This is a friendly reminder to enter books read as we are nearing the end of the 2020 Premier’s Reading Challenge.

To date, 83 students have finished the challenge- what an amazing achievement! There are also several students who are nearly finished so there is still plenty of time to complete the challenge.

LEAP into LEARNING

We invite you to enjoy our L.E.A.P play-based sessions with a difference! Unlock your child’s learning potential before they start school in 2021.

Come along with your child to our 1 hour L.E.A.P morning sessions designed to help your child with their own learning as they work alongside teachers and yourself within an engaging and creative space.
Dates:

  • Wednesday 12 August 9 - 10am
