Dear Parents

What a whirlwind term!  This term we managed Covid school restrictions and easing to normal school life.  The extreme weather and torrential rain causing flood damage to the Stage 2 building block and thankfully restorations are almost complete.  Due to the persisting wet weather students have had to stay in class for wet weather duty instead of outdoors to play.  Teachers have done more wet weather duties than ever before (never a complaint). Playing outdoors has seemed the exception. Reconciliation has been postponed. Gala sport days have been cancelled which is disappointing as I know how much the students look forward to being active and playing with other school teams. In all of this state of change and uncertainty we have remained positive, adaptable and grateful that we have been able to reconnect face to face in school activities that bring St Kieran’s together as a faith filled community.  It has been wonderful to see parents connect with each other in the playground after so long.  Despite all this uncertainty, I admire the character strength of optimism and hope that flourishes and permeates at St Kieran’s. This to me has been the most rewarding outcome this term and I look forward to term 2 with you.

We can be so proud of our outreach and servant discipleship effort this term.  We raised $1 063 from the Easter Egg Raffle sales, $352 from the Mufti Day, $480 from Umbrella sales and $485 fromthe used uniform sale.  A total of $2 380 will go to the Diocese of Lismore for Flood Relief. All proceeds from Caritas Project Compassion will go to the Ukraine Relief.  This is an outstanding commitment and model of service and discipleship to people in need both locally and globally. Well done St Kieran’s.

The students are well settled into their school routines and learning so well.  My visits to the classrooms during learning walks, talking to the students about their work and learning demonstrates to me that the students know their learning intentions and success criteria to achieve their best learning.  Their learning is intentional, focused, goal driven and explicit with the guidance of the wonderful teachers at St Kieran’s.  A big shout out to the teachers and staff who have worked so tirelessly through Covid, isolation periods, student attendance impacted by Covid cases to get through a busy and compacted learning curriculum.

A big thank you to Theo from Bunnings Balgowlah.  They have donated a large container to store new outdoor chess pieces and plants for the garden bed.  We are truly grateful for the generosity of local businesses like Bunnings that support schools.  We are thankful for this ongoing partnership with Bunnings. Say hello to Theo if you are in the store.

We have a new space for prayer and for breaking open scripture.  The room is called the Emmaus Room.  This space is always available to parents before school as a place of meditation, reflection and contemplation.  We have resources available in the room that help us pray, pause for a while and contemplate the wonder and awe of our faith.  I look forward to meeting you there any morning to show you this special and dedicated room.

This Sunday is Palm Sunday, the beginning of Holy Week.  The students have prepared a reverent prayer service this week to commemorate the passion of Christ and  Holy Week leading to Easter Sunday where we celebrate the hope and salvation of the risen Christ.  We look forward to you joining us tomorrow morning in the Church as we pray and reflect together at this important time in the Church’s calendar.

Today we farewelled Bev Butler and wish her all the best.  Next term we welcome Mrs Anna Jones to the role.

Stay safe and enjoy the well earned holiday period.  Happy Easter to all families at St Kieran’s.

Prayer for Peace and Justice in Ukraine

God of peace and justice,
who changes the hardened heart
and break the poser of violence,
we entrust the people of Ukraine to you.

Protect them in this time of mortal peril;
let them know not death but life,
not slavery but freedom.

You are Father of all;
we are brothers and sisters.

Give us the strength
to live that truth in love,
choosing peace not war.
Through Christ our Lord
Amen

Term 2

It’s almost difficult to believe, but we’ve come to the end of Term 1!  Our teachers and families are all looking forward to a break so that on returning for Term 2 – everyone is rested and ready to take on all the events that another busy term brings us.

On Tuesday 26 April, we will hold a special Anzac Day assembly.  Our Year 6 Civics and Citizenship team will lead us in this special commemoration of Anzac Day.  Parents are invited to attend and we look forward to seeing many of you there at 8.45 am.

Enjoy the holiday break and the special blessings that Easter brings.

Holy Week Liturgies
I would like to thank the students and teachers for preparing prayerful liturgies in preparation for our Holy Week and Resurrection Liturgies. We encourage as many parents as possible to attend our Holy Week Liturgy commencing at 9.15am in the Church.

From a Religious Education point of view, preparing and presenting liturgies reflect the learning that has taken place over the last few weeks. Each grade has focused on a particular part of our Catholic story pertinent to their year of learning. The students learn the story of their faith, explore their meaning, and try to apply the values, attitudes and beliefs to their lives. All of this culminates in the reflective prayers and Liturgies we share.

As a proudly Catholic school our Easter journey will continue on Friday 29 April at 9.15am in the Church. Let us remember that we are an Easter people. The most important part of the Easter story is the Resurrection.

Below are the times for Parish Celebrations.

This term our Kindy students have been piloting the new K -2 Religious Education Curriculum. The program reflects the Early Learning Framework with activities specifically structured for the K -2 age and stage of development. Teachers attended professional development last year. They also joined discussion groups to evaluate the program this term. Our Kindy students have given us the thumbs up. They display excellent engagement and learning from the trial program. Thank you to our Kindy teachers for investing the extra time and energy required to make the rollout of this new K- 2  Religious Education program a success.

We wish you a happy and holy Easter,

Yours in Religious Education
     Mrs Kerrie Wetzlar

From the P&F

Nearing the end of Term 1 and what a term it has been but we made it!

Thank you to all who purchased umbrellas, bought raffle tickets for the Easter egg hampers and donated a gold coin for mufti day to help support the Diocesan of Lismore to assist with their recovery after the floods.

Today we farewelled our lovely Bev Butler who has been part of St Kieran's for many years and has provided nothing but kindness and support to our children and families by being part of the administration team and now it's time for her to go and spend time with her family so we wish her well with the next chapter of her life.

Coming up next term we have the Mother's Day breakfast and Liturgy on Friday 6 May in the playground from 7:30am. Menu items supplied by Mrs Jones can be purchased via Qkr! for both the parents and children. Also there will be a coffee van onsite for purchases. A raffle will be happening as well with a few great prizes to be won!

On Friday 20 May we have one of our favourite events of the year which is the Parent's Cocktail night! The P&F are looking forward to seeing as many parents there as possible on the night as it's a great opportunity to meet/catch up with the parents from Kindy-Year 6 and with a welcome drink and live entertainment included in the $60 per person price - you don't want to miss out! Each ticket purchased will also go into the running for some fabulous lucky door prizes.

The family photoshoot for $90 for a 15 minute session is back on Qkr! again due to the date change and there are a few weekends on 7th, 14th, 28th and 29th May available so if you would like to purchase and book in please do so!

We wish everyone a lovely Easter and holiday break. See you all in Term 2.
