Year 6 enjoying Canberra

LOOKING AHEAD

Dear Families

It is great to be back at St Kieran’s after my sabbatical leave over the last six weeks. I had many wonderful experiences in Ireland and Italy where I visited significant locations such as Clonmacnoise, where St Kieran (St Ciarán) established his monastery in 544, and San Gimignano where the Augustinians have a monastery for retreat and contemplation.

During my absence, many wonderful events took place such as Pantastic and Grandparents Day. Along with the Year 6 Canberra trip, excursions, athletics carnivals and STEM exhibits, it has been a very busy term and with three weeks still to go! I would like to thank Marisa Bombardieri, Kerrie Wetzlar and Emily Channell who all took on responsibilities in my absence and did a fantastic job.

This morning’s Father’s Day Liturgy and breakfast was very well attended and concluded with a prayer and song for all the wonderful dads and grandads who were present. Many thanks to the P&F and helpers for the food and to Kindergarten and the teachers for the liturgical celebration.

The Term 3 P&F Meeting will be held in The Hub on Monday evening commencing at 7pm. Among the usual updates, there will be information on staffing for 2020 and how this may affect classes. I hope you are able to attend.

Next Wednesday our school will be hosting a free parent workshop for families across the peninsula on the importance of school attendance. In the workshop parents will explore ways they can develop positive routines for school, encourage a “can-do” attitude with their child and develop life-long skills and good habits. The workshop begins at 6.30pm in The Hub and will conclude by 8pm.

Two St Kieran’s students participated in the annual Bear Pit Public Speaking Competition held in Parliament House in Sydney this week. Ashleigh W. and Sienna C. competed against others from schools in the Manly electorate with James Griffin MP adjudicating. Both girls did extremely well with Sienna receiving a highly commended trophy. Congratulations to both girls!

Religious Education and Mass Dates

Congratulations to our wonderful Kindergarten students who ably led the school community in prayer for our fathers this morning. With one voice they sang beautifully and read thoughtful recounts and prayers about their fathers. Thank you to the Kindergarten teachers who so thoughtfully prepared the children.

We have received many positive comments from Fr Dave, parishioners, parents and teachers for the reverent and enthusiastic manner in which our students celebrated the Feast of St Augustine last week. All grades played a part in the Mass and each group of children, representing their grade, conducted themselves with dignity and respect.

Thank you to the teachers who assisted in preparing the students for their roles in the Mass. Our special thanks go to Miss Channell for preparing our Eucharistic Celebration. We would also like to acknowledge and thank Fr Dave for presiding over the Mass and for his thoughtful and upbeat homily. Chatting with Kindy during the homily is indeed a brave dialogue to initiate Fr Dave. To Mr Ian Woodbury, our diligent acolyte, thank you for your service to school and parish community.

Year 6 Camp

Last week, it was our privilege to travel to Canberra with our Stage 3 students. Our action-packed three day excursion extravaganza was an outstanding opportunity for our students to consolidate their understandings about our Australian democracy, both past and present, as part of our studies across History, English and Geography.

During our time in Canberra we visited many iconic Australian sites, including The Royal Australian Mint, Parliament House, the Australian Museum, the National Library, the National Arboretum, the Australian Institute of Sport, the Electoral Education Centre and undoubtedly, a special highlight of our excursion was a very moving tour through our Australian War Memorial.

We received so many positive comments from facilitators at these venues on our students’ excellent conduct and in particular, their knowledge and enthusiasm. We were extremely proud of them - leaving family for three days can sometimes be unsettling, however we found these wonderful Year 6 students to be extremely well-adjusted and such responsible ambassadors for St. Kieran’s. It was a wonderful experience for us all to take our learning outside the classroom in this way! Please enjoy reading some accounts of our excursion from Zoe R and Illyra G in Year 6.

My eyes lay upon the unique and fun looking sports on offer as I entered the AIS Virtual Reality Sports Centre. Excitement and adrenaline filled my body as the staff signalled for us to play! Straight away, I raced over to kayaking, seeing there was a quirky looking machine with what looked like an uncomfortable chair fixed on top.  I waited for a long time (it was quite a popular game!) and finally I placed myself onto the machine. I had watched others play so I already thought I knew what to do. Let me tell you that it is so much easier to watch than actually playing! I learnt that it is definitely not my destiny to be a kayaker. Later on, I played on the cycling machine, soccer machine, skiing machine and the rock climbing wall. I also took a picture on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd podium where I posed proudly on the 1st winning step...well, in mid-air as my friend shoved me off playfully (and competitively) and took my position in 1st place! I really enjoyed the diverse sports and being an Olympian for thirty minutes is all I’d need to feel enthusiasm for sport!

From the Arboretum to Parliament House, the Mint and Questacon, we got to see it all!, but our nation wasn’t the only thing we learnt about.

Let me start off by saying that the excursions planned for us by our teachers were beyond incredible, and we learnt so much from each and every one of them, whilst having a great amount of fun. I could go on and on about our mini talent quest, meeting future Olympians, getting stuck in the pod playground slide, and trying to crack a mystery at Questacon, but I want to focus on the true highlight of Canberra: friends.

I know what you’re thinking, friends?! When I could talk about the War Memorial, or the National Library? But I came back from Canberra with not only a few more centimetres to my height, I came back with so many new friends, both male and female. I now know much more than just the classroom work ethic of my peers. Before Canberra, Year Six was separated into many different friendship groups, but a quick three day excursion to a destination four hours away from home soon fixed that, and with an added bonus: we got to share countless hours of incredible experiences together.

Three cheers for Year Six Canberra Camp!!!
Hip Hip, Hooray!
Hip Hip, Hooray!

Bear Pit Public Speaking

“A guinea pig, the best school, the best school ever !”  I had begun my speech to the Bear Pit. It was a long journey from a classroom speech to a Year level speech then a Stage speech.  But here I was finally at the ultimate goal, State Parliament House and THE BEAR PIT.

I was shaking with nerves, I could feel my heart racing, my eyes darted around the room and there were butterflies in my tummy. Once I started my speech I felt more relaxed. The judges looked down at their papers recording details of my presentation. As I was giving my speech I forgot what I was supposed to say. I quickly glanced down at my notes and was soon back on track.

All too soon my presentation was concluding. “I’m going to make a difference in my life and so can you!”. The audience applauded, I breathed a sigh of relief and mum finally put the camera down.  After my presentation our Member of Parliament, Mr James Griffin, congratulated me and called the next speaker. Following all the presentations we went and enjoyed morning tea at Parliament House in the “Stranger Restaurant”. It was rather posh. I was too tired to go back to school, not really, so mum and dad took me out to lunch. What an extraordinary day!

This year I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to go to the Parliament of NSW to represent Stage 3 and St Kieran's at Bear Pit.

I was nervous beforehand, but when I got up to present at the Lectern, I felt excited and the whole experience felt surreal. The standard of competition was high and every student presented with confidence and enthusiasm.

The whole experience was amazing. Thank you to our MP, James Griffin, for continuing to run this program and for giving us an opportunity to express ourselves and build upon our public speaking skills.

We hope all our amazing fathers had a wonderful morning this morning. This event wouldn't happen without the generosity of members from our wonderful community.

We had a team of wonderful parents at the school at 7am helping set up, cook over 280 egg and bacon rolls, serve and clean up. Thank you so so much for your help today!

We also had some amazing businesses support us today which meant we could keep our costs down as low as possible so thank you to Simon Foale from Verd Manly ( 3C and 1L) for the amazing muffins and Adam Schoene (a ex - St Kieran's family) from Bakers Delight Balgowlah for the rolls. Your continued support is very much appreciated.
