Dear Families

It has been a very busy week at St Kieran’s this week with events such as the Parents and Friends meeting and Northern Beaches Swimming Carnival on Monday, a visit by the NSW Police Force on Tuesday to Stage 3, the Diocesan Schools Staff Mass last night and soccer clinics today. Next week is just as busy with open classrooms, Year 4 excursion and a visit from our local Federal Member, Zali Steggall on Monday, finishing with the cross-country trials on Friday.

For those families new to our school, Week 7 is gazetted as Fallow Week, a week of rest from meetings and homework. At this time of the term, as many of the children become tired, we encourage families to have a break from the regular routines of school and spend more time with each other. See if you can do at least one activity together next week as a family.

As mentioned, the Federal Member for Warringah, Zali Steggall MP, is visiting St Kieran’s on Monday morning to present two new flags to the school. This is in response to a written request by our Civics and Citizenship leaders at the start of the year. After speaking to the students, she will then do a tour of the school, stopping into Stage 3 to talk about issues such as climate change, which the students have done a lot of work on during the last couple of years. I hope you can make it to assembly and the open classroom visits.

Next week, our Stage 3 students begin a new program that focuses on positivity, growth mindset and resilience. The program is called The Boomerang Effect and is supported by the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles. Our Stage 3 teachers spent a day training earlier in the year and have prepared to deliver the program throughout the year. Part of the program will involve a visit from some of the Sea Eagle’s players who will talk on the themes of positivity and resilience, as well as a parent evening presented by the authors. We will let Stage 3 parents know the details very soon.

Congratulations to all the swimmers at this week’s carnival and to those who have made it through to the Broken Bay Carnival next Tuesday night at Mingara.  Special mention to Lachlan D who was awarded Swimmer of the Meet and also boke 5 records on the day.

SCHOOL  NEWS

Religious Education

Each year the Bishop gathers all the teachers from the Broken Bay Diocese for Mass. Yesterday the teachers of St Kieran’s Manly Vale boarded a bus, driven by Mr Sheedy, to make the pilgrimage to the Light of Christ Centre at Waitara to celebrate the Broken Bay Diocesan Teachers and Staff Mass.  It is a reminder to us all that we are part of a community larger than our school. It reminds us of our shared heritage and common goals in Catholic Education. Following Mass, we welcomed teachers new to our diocese, including Miss Wright. As a community, we also celebrate those who have served for many years in Catholic education. Congratulations Mrs Rose on 35 years of dedicated service.

Northern Beaches Swim Carnival

On Monday 2 March 26 students from St Kieran’s competed in the Northern Beaches Swimming Carnival at Warringah Aquatic Centre. St Kieran’s placed 3rd overall in the carnival and Lachlan D (Year 6) was awarded swimmer of the meet. We were very proud of the participation and sportsmanship demonstrated by all St Kieran’s students.

Congratulations to the following students who will now go on to compete at the Broken Bay Swimming Carnival:
Mila C, Lachlan D, Kieran H, Tadhg M, Michael P, Alana R and Jaden W

Good luck everyone.

Student Thoughts:
On Monday I went to the Peninsula Swimming Carnival. It was a lot of fun to swim and race against students from other schools. I competed in the junior relay, 50m freestyle, 50m breaststroke, 50m backstroke, 50m butterfly and the junior medley. I enjoyed supporting the other swimmers from St Kieran’s. My favourite part of the day was swimming in the junior relay because we got to work together as a team.
Alana R Year 3

On Monday I swam in the Peninsula Swimming Carnival. I swam in the 50m freestyle and I was in lane 1. It was lots of fun watching other people from St Kieran’s swim.

Premier's Reading Challenge

The Premier’s Reading Challenge has commenced and students are now able to logon and enter their books. If your child has a logon from previous years, this may still be used. If your child doesn’t know or has forgotten their logon, their class teacher has a copy of them.

A new feature to the site is the PRC Student Site, making it much easier to navigate and search for and add books.

For further information on the PRC, go to their website. https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/home.html

This week in library lessons, the students in K, 1 and 2 read the story, “Library Lion” by Michelle Knudsen. In previous weeks, years 1 and 2 have read, “Old Friends, News Friends” by Andrew Daddo. Year 2 have also read, “Under the Love Umbrella” by Davina Bell. These are all PRC books so can be added to their list.

Please note that the PRC closes on Friday 28 August.

Good luck and happy reading!

Zali Steggall Visit

Our Civics and Citizenship team have taken the initiative to contact our Federal Member, Zali Steggall. They decided to do this as the school is in need of new flags.  Pia and Eve from the Civics and Citizenship team wrote to Zali Steggall’s office requesting a new Australian flag and a new Indigenous flag. They also invited her to visit our Stage 3 learning space, the Hub.  As a result of this, Zali will be visiting our school on Monday 9 March. She will be presenting the flags to our school community at Monday morning’s assembly after which she has indicated that she would like to visit the Hub. We’re looking forward to her visit and welcoming her to St Kieran’s!

Book Club

The current issue of Book Club is due 7 March.  Online orders only.  Please follow the instructions on your magazine.  No late order will be accepted.

Class Names

You may have noticed this year that the names of each class end in either ‘B’ or ‘W’ (blue or white).  This is in line with other Broken Bay schools as directed by the CSO.

In each grade the ‘B’ and ‘W’ classifications are in alphabetical order, ie Sullivan = 3B and Wright = 3W.

Dads' Curry Night

The first Curry Night will kick off in Manly as it's always a good  place to start with The Steyne, then on to Ashianas.

There are plenty of places to visit afterwards if you get a long leave pass for the night.

So please put Friday 20 March in your diaries - 6pm onwards kick off and 7.30pm at Ashiana.

Of course a few kids left St Kieran’s last year and are off to new schools, however our Curry Night has an alumni, and old dads are more than welcome, and in fact, encouraged to come along.

All new Kindy dads are especially invited.
Any questions please let me know.  Look forward to catching up,
    Cheers Howie

Children's Liturgy

The children’s liturgy ministry is always looking for new mums, grandparents and carers to be involved in this wonderful and rewarding ministry.  Being a volunteer in this ministry involves helping with children’s liturgy that takes place on Sundays at the churches of St Cecilia and St Kieran’s.  You will be placed on roster alongside another volunteer who is currently doing children’s liturgy to help out about once to twice a term.  Children’s liturgy only takes place within the school term and doesn’t take place when year family masses are scheduled.  All information, resources and activities are printed off and provided by the children’s liturgy co-ordinator on a weekly basis.  All volunteers will be required to obtain a working with children check number, but this is simple to do, and this is something that I can help you obtain.   If you feel like this is something you could get involved with or would simply like more information, please feel free to contact me on 0403 063 013 or at bryannecrabb@gmail.com
