Dear Parents

We look forward to seeing you tomorrow morning for the Mother’s Day breakfast at 7.30am.  This will be followed by the raffle draw and special Liturgy led by Kindergarten for our beautiful mothers and carers who we love dearly.  We take this opportunity to wish all our mothers and carers a very Happy Mother’s Day on Sunday. Enjoy this special day with your family to be reminded of how much you are adored and how precious you are to your children.

It has been a long time in waiting, but now that the restrictions have eased, we look forward to the Family Cocktail Night on Friday 20 May. I hope to see you there and get to know you better this evening over a shared meal and drink.  Let’s celebrate our return to normal social life after so long and enjoy each other’s company.

We have an important parent meeting on Tuesday 10 May, 6.00pm next week for parents of boys from Kinder to Year 4. I encourage you to attend this meeting - Not to be missed!

School Dates

Term 2 Week 2

Next Tuesday evening we are having a presentation for all interested parents on the advantages of keeping boys at St Kieran’s in Stage 3. We look forward to being able to share the positives of such a decision with our parent community.

A number of years ago our school worked with Ian Lillico who had completed some research into the education of boys. He did this as part of his Churchill Fellowship and put together 52 recommendations for schools to consider when educating boys. Time has passed and much has changed but there are some key points made in these recommendations that are crucial and continue to be relevant.
He believed that “Boys learn teachers and not subjects” The recommendation stated that boys tend to work for teachers they believe like them and respected them as an individual. The relationship, therefore, between the student and teacher is the key to positive learning for students.

Another of the recommendations states that schools must emphasise The Arts and make concerted efforts to get boys into drama, music and movement as this helps them balance their lives and provides an outlet for their emotions.  This is the reason behind ensuring our Stage 3 students have key roles in the school musical.

Allowing greater choice, more use of technology and interaction/collaboration in learning was also listed as another priority.  At St Kieran’s, the structure of the Stage 3 learning space, the Hub allows for greater interaction amongst students, choice in learning and use of technology.

Additionally, one of the recommendations stated that when boys are given responsibility they grow.  The leadership opportunities available to our Stage 3 students allow all students to grow and develop important proficiencies such as empathy, strategic planning, collaboration and presentation skills.  All of this increases self confidence and develops greater independence.

We look forward to seeing many parents at the presentation next Tuesday.

Religious Education

It is with great excitement that children across the school are preparing for Mother’s Day. The range of art, crafts and creative design is amazing. We look forward to our Mother’s Day Liturgy prepared by Kindy. Commencing at 8.45 on Friday we are aiming to present in the assembly area but will move to the hall if it is raining.

As a mother and grandmother I would like to share a prayer with you that has carried me over the joys and challenges of motherhood.

Prayer for Serenity
God, grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change,
the courage to change the things I can,
and the wisdom to know the difference.

Celebration of First Reconciliation

Year 4 students will celebrate their First Reconciliation in Week 4. 4B will celebrate their First Reconciliation on Monday 16 May at 9.30am and 4W on Friday 20 May also at 9.30am. Both celebrations will be in the church and parents and friends are warmly invited to attend these liturgies of peace giving and reconciliation.

Year One Family Mass is planned for next Sunday the 15 May at 9.30am. This is a wonderful opportunity for the parents of Yr1 to share a cup of tea and a catch up following Mass. Yr1 parents can expect a note in their child’s bag giving all the details.

A reminder an overview of the Parish Sacramental Program for parents who are new to the program, mainly Year 3 parents, will be held on Tuesday 10 May at 9.30am and Wednesday 11 May at 7.00pm in the church. The Parish program is open to ALL children over the age of 8.  Any child in the school who has not commenced their Sacraments is encouraged to join the Parish Sacramental Program.

Yours in Religious Education
