Dear Parents

Dear Parents

We are now over halfway through the term! With Fallow Week next week, we have the opportunity to slow down for a few days and spend quality time as a family away from homework, meetings etc. I hope you can take the time to enjoy the break.

COVID Restrictions

The Department of Education today announced that restrictions on parent pick up and drop off have been eased. From Monday, parents are now allowed to enter the school for drop off and pick up while keeping a 1.5m distance between adults. We ask that you ensure this is the case when you come into the school playground. This is great news! A reminder, if you need to speak with the class teacher, I ask that you arrange a time to do so through the school office. Parents can also be spectators at the cross country on Monday. I will keep you updated with further information as it comes to hand.

Congratulations

Last night teachers from across the Diocese of Broken Bay gathered to celebrate the beginning of the school year with a Mass led by Bishop Anthony, Fr Dave Austin and other priests of the Diocese. Mrs Wetzlar and Mrs Sullivan were recognised for their continued service to Catholic education; congratulations on this great achievement.

Parents and Friends Meeting

Our first P&F meeting will take place in the library on Monday 15 March at 6.30pm. If you plan on attending, you will need to sign in via the NSW Services app and follow COVID-safe guidelines. An agenda will be sent out next week.

Open Day

Open Day is fast approaching, and we are excited about highlighting our school to the wider community. We will need assistance from parents with the serving of tea and coffee, tours and welcoming our visitors. A Google form will be sent home early next week for you to complete if you can assist.

Parish Youth Mass

I encourage as many of our families as possible to join in the St Kieran’s Youth Mass to be held on Sunday 14 March at 6pm. Fr Dave sent the following invite: “All parishioners are welcome, especially families and youth. Students from local colleges together with their families have been invited to attend. This liturgy is tailored specifically for young people with vibrant music, an engaging message and of course Augustinian community. Fr Percival Sevare OSA will be the Presider.”

NAPLAN - Information for Parents

Over the past few weeks, I’ve shared some information regarding the gathering of data and assessments at St Kieran’s.  Alongside the regular gathering and analysis of data that occurs in school, NAPLAN assessments are an additional tool that can be both a summative form of assessment as well as diagnostic.  Summative because it provides a snapshot of where the student sits in their learning trajectory and Diagnostic because it allows for deep analysis of areas of need.

If your child is in either Year 3 or Year 5, he/she will be sitting the NAPLAN assessment in 2021.  In preparation for NAPLAN Online in 2021, St Kieran’s will complete a NAPLAN Online Practice Test in Term 1. The practice test will provide an opportunity for students in Years 3 and 5 to familiarise themselves with the types of questions, tools and functions on the NAPLAN Online tests.  This test will take place between Monday 22 March and Thursday 1 April.
Please click on this link to find out more about the Naplan assessments.

Have a lovely weekend.

Zoom Meeting with Bishop Randazzo and other Catholic School student leaders
Our Mission Team and representatives from other schools will join a Zoom meeting with Bishop Randazzo next Tuesday. Their purpose is to discuss student leadership through service.  Students from Catholic Schools across the Diocese will join in the discussion. We wish our Mission Team a fruitful meeting as they learn how other student leaders contribute to their school community.

REST and RENEWAL
At St Kieran’s Catholic School and many other schools, Week 7 is designated as a time of rest - a fallow week. In the busy ebb and flow of our school year we plan one week of doing less each term. A week with no school meetings and no homework, apart from reading of course.  READ MORE

PARISH YOUTH MASS
In the days before no singing in public St Kieran’s Parish Masses were known for their upbeat, vibrant Youth Masses. Sunday 14 March at 6.00pm is the date set down for a return to Masses specifically prepared with the youth of our community in mind. Children and families from St Kieran’s, specifically our Stage 3 students, are invited to attend. If you play an instrument you may like to introduce yourself to the band leader. I encourage our Stage 3 students to ‘give it a go’.  READ MORE

Clean Up Schools Day

Yesterday our Environment Team led the school in Clean Up Schools Day, as part of the Clean Up Australia Day program. All classes participated by visiting and cleaning their special areas around the school. We discovered that there wasn’t too much rubbish to collect and we already have a very clean school environment.

Northern Beaches Swimming Carnival

On Tuesday 2 March students from St Kieran’s represented our school at the Northern Beaches Cluster Swimming Carnival. The carnival looked a bit different this year with no parent spectators allowed however, the St Kieran’s swim team still represented the school with pride.

We placed fourth overall at the carnival with a number of our students producing outstanding results and qualifying for the Broken Bay Swimming Carnival including; Felicity B, Harrison D, Oliver F, Kieran H, Joseph H, Alana R, Marlon W and Philippa Q. Congratulations on a great result.

The PRC is now open and closes for students on Friday August 20, 2021. Students may use their logins from previous years and Kindergarten students will receive theirs in the next few weeks.

At St Kieran’s we have always strongly encouraged the students to participate in the Challenge to not only foster a love of reading but to develop their reading skills.
You must read a certain number of books to complete the challenge. See the table below:

There is a student site that makes it easier to search for books and enter the books that have been read.
Happy Reading!

A Family Prayer for Lent
God of love and care,
We know that Jesus came to bring us closer to You and to one another.
May who we are, and what we give to others this Lent,
truly help to make the world a better place.

God of reconciliation,
During Lent, teach us to be true friends of one another
and especially those who are in need.
Guide us in being generous and forgiving.
May we follow faithfully, speak courageously, and live joyfully
the Good News of Jesus Christ who brings peace to our world.

As we journey through the Lenten season,
help us to let go of our personal wants and needs.
Help us to change our selfishness into generosity.
Turn our unkind words into gentle, thankful words.
May our thoughts and actions reveal your love.

Help us to welcome others and be a source of life-giving energy.
May we follow, speak, and live the way of Jesus Christ
as we look forward to the promise of the Resurrection.
We pray in Jesus' name.
