Dear Parents

Our Kindergarten class reached a significant milestone in their schooling yesterday having completed their first 100 days of school. Along with Mrs Hocking and Mrs Powell, the children spent the day doing everything “100”! They spent time with their Year 6 Buddies and even time dancing a jig with the principal! Considering the massive disruption the students have had to endure earlier this year, they have proved their resilience, as have all our students, in bouncing back into school life and continuing from where they left off. Congratulations Kindy on this very special occasion.

The Feast of St Kieran is next Wednesday. As our school’s patron saint, we always celebrate the occasion with a special day of activities on the playground. This year we will be holding a modified celebration which will occur next Thursday. The students will be allowed to wear mufti and will take part in a series of fun events. More details can be found in the newsletter.

Following last week’s Athletics Fun Day, students who gained a 1st, 2nd or 3rd place in the final received their ribbons at a brief presentation assembly this morning. Photos will be placed on the Facebook page today.

At St Kieran’s, we take the matter of child protection very seriously. National Child Protection Week 2020 runs from Sunday 6th – Saturday 12th September, and this year The National Association for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (NAPCAN) is celebrating their 30th year of advocating for the rights of children and young people. We know that the only way to keep children and young people safe from harm is to stop abuse before it occurs by empowering children to have their voices heard within their community network. To reinforce student safety and wellbeing, students will be participating in lessons that will address stranger danger, online safety and respectful relationships throughout the week. For more information, please access the NAPCAN site. https://www.napcan.org.au/

With ongoing restrictions concerning COVID-19 and schools changing regularly, we are now able to allow band and drama back into the school next week. Eye-Heart Science will return to school next term but will continue to operate from their warehouse in Brookvale. Each of these “community providers” have their own COVID-19 Safety Plan that allows them to continue operating.

The pandemic continues to place financial pressure on many families in our community. I encourage any family that is feeling the pressure to access the COVID relief that is being offered by Catholic Schools Broken Bay.

Before and After School Care (OSHC) is provided by CatholicCare, part of the Diocese of Broken Bay. Our school has a new coordinator who started last week. We welcome Alanna to the St Kieran’s community and look forward to her and her team caring for our children before and after school.

Catholic Schools Broken Bay recently advertised for a Promotions and Marketing Coordinator to work at St Kieran’s two days per week. I am happy to announce that Susanne Foale has accepted the position. We look forward to working with Susanne to find new and exciting ways to promote our wonderful school and its community.

God Bless

Assessment

As part of best practice, teachers will routinely collect data on student learning and investigate the information collated about each individual student.  It is this practice that enables teachers to build on and further develop specific learning trajectories for students.  Differentiated learning and teaching means that teachers don’t just teach to the general or middle group, they meet all student needs.  They are able to adapt their approach for different students so that everyone in the class has the chance to perform to their best ability.

Our assessment practices at St Kieran’s are based on the following principles, which have been included in our Assessment Policy:

At St Kieran’s, we believe that assessment is a key component of the teaching/learning cycle. We believe that a full picture of a student’s learning can be gained through 3 processes of assessment.

Assessment for learning
Assessment for learning is the process of seeking and interpreting evidence for use by learners and their teachers to decide where the learners are in their learning and where they need to go.

Assessment for Learning enables teachers to build on students’ successes and strengths as well as to correct weaknesses

Assessment of learning
Products, tasks, checklists, observations and conferences which take a ‘snapshot’ of the learning processed and understood by a student at the completion of a unit or concept.  Assessment of learning can be used for formal and informal reporting

Assessment as learning.
Students reflect and comment on their learning as a form of assessing their own progress.

Effectively, there are many aspects to assessment.  Assessment can be summative, meaning that it is a summary of the learning that has taken place.  Mid-year and end of year reports are examples of summative assessments.  Assessment can also be reflective and can be used to plan further progress or “where to next”.  This is a process that can be undertaken by the teacher who designs learning programs or the student who can reflect on learning and plan for the future.  It can also be done collaboratively between teacher and student.

Have a good weekend,

Religious Education

Congratulations to our Year 3students who have completed their First Holy Communion. This weekend ten more students will make their First Holy Communion. Over the next few weeks, we will be publishing photos of students who have completed their First Holy Communion.

Next week we will celebrate St Kieran’s legacy to our community with our Monday morning prayers. On Wednesday, 9 September, St Kieran’s Feast Day, students will be reading and viewing texts about the life of St Kieran. On the following day, Thursday 10 September, we will be holding our St Kieran’s Day Celebrations.

In order to comply with COVID safety regulations, our St Kieran’s Day Celebrations will look a little different this year. Children can wear mufti which must include closed in shoes or runners and a hat. Students will not need any money. Nothing will be available for purchase. Following morning tea our whole school will rotate through a variety of fun games in the school playground.

St Kieran

St Ciaran was a holy man who dedicated his life to build the Catholic church in Ireland. In his early years he set up monasteries and helped spread the Good News of Jesus.

He set off towards the middle of Ireland, near the river Shannon to a place called Clonmacnoise. There he built a small wooden church. This was the first of many churches to spring up in this place.
St Ciaran was a man of prayer and full of faith. His holiness led him to be known as one of the 12 Apostles of Ireland.

St Ciaran was struck down by a plague and died on 9 September 544. Over 1000 years ago! He was only 33 years old. He only lived a short time but he achieved so much.

Grade 4 Geography Field Trip to Passmore Reserve

On Thursday 3 September, Grade 4 went on their second Geography Field Trip to explore the different environments in the local area. We walked to Passmore Reserve to explore land use and the various ways that the use of natural and urban areas can impact the local environment in positive and negative ways.

Here are 4Blue’s reflections of the day:

We did many fun activities where we explored Passmore Reserve. We took part in a scavenger hunt and had to find different clues around the park to get the answers.

We used a quadrat and drew the leaf litter what we saw in the quadrat. We recorded the location and the key in the workbook. It was fun!

I enjoyed doing the scavenger hunt because I was able to explore Passmore Reserve and got to use my compass skills. I also enjoyed having half a day out of school. I wished it was a little bit longer.

We used compasses and a map of the park to locate the clues on our scavenger hunt. These geographical tools helped us to look in the right direction.

I learnt that the rangers put boundaries around the lagoon so that the pollution doesn’t go into the lagoon and pollute more of the water and the animals. I also learnt that the local council plants new trees that have wiring around them, so that they don't get blown away or get knocked over by an animal!

I learnt how the lagoon gets polluted and how the council is trying to stop it, by putting nets around it to keep it free from run-off and rubbish.

I learnt that the council dredges the sea bed to check what is in the sand and at the bottom of the lagoon.

The lagoon has a very fragile ecosystem. If the users of that space don’t give something back, it may destroy it!

Manly Lagoon often floods during heavy rain. The council has put up a mesh boundary around the water's edge to prevent rubbish from polluting the whole place.

We used quadrats to draw an audit of what was in the natural areas such as leaf litter and rocks.

We used quadrats to see what was on the ground and looked up to see where the leaf litter was coming from.

We had to use maps to navigate our way around the oval to find locations and for many fun tasks.

We used quadrats to see what's on the ground and look at the leaf litter like sticks, twigs and even a rope.

We used compasses to know what direction we were going.

I enjoyed the day because we got to leave the school grounds and learn about our local environment.

I enjoyed the Field Trip and the treasure hunt because I got to have fun and learn about the environment of Passmore and the facilities available to locals.

Our day was fun! We used compasses to locate places on the map of the park and playground. We had twenty minutes to explore and had to run from clue to clue.

I enjoyed our day because we got to learn outside in the sun with our friends and we learnt how to use new geographical tools.
