Dear Parents

Today is the feast day of St Ignatius of Loyola. He is the founder of the Society of Jesus, a missionary order that spread the Good News throughout the world. The order is also known as the Jesuits, to which Pope Francis belongs. One of St Ignatius enduring legacies is that of reflection and contemplation. Through a reflective exercise known as the Examen, we can reflect on our day, give thanks and to look at what we can do better tomorrow. This form of reflection can assist us in finding peace in these challenging times. I have included a link if you wish to find out more.

As COVID cases are on the increase, it is a timely reminder that we ask parents to continue limiting your presence on the school premises wherever possible. Although I have encouraged face-to-face meetings with teachers, I remind you of the sanitising and social distancing rules for when you visit for Parent Teacher Interviews next week:
  • Wait outside the classroom until invited in
  • Sanitise your hands upon entry
  • Keep a distance of at least 1.5m during the interview
  • Do not attend the interview if you are feeling unwell
  • Leave the school as soon as your interviews are complete
  • Children must remain with their parents at all times (children cannot play on playground)
The interviews are a great opportunity to connect once again with the class teacher. Be prepared with any questions but be conscious of the 15-minute limit. There may be other interviews following or the teacher may need to prepare for class.

Due to the ongoing COVID restrictions, we will continue with the current afternoon pick up arrangements. However, for the morning arrival we now ask that all students arrive at school by the 8.43am bell. Students arriving after this time will be marked as a late arrival.

As part of the preparation for Kindergarten 2021, the LEAP into LEARNING program was launched this week. The Learning Exploring Active Play sessions (LEAP) replace the Learning Together playgroups that began last year. They are open to all Kindy 2021 students, as well as children from other families that may wish to participate. I encourage you to extend this invitation to any family friend who may have a child starting school next year.

God Bless

Semester 1 Reports

The Semester 1 reports will be available via the Compass Portal from today, Friday 31 July .  Please check Compass Newsfeed for instructions regarding how to access the report.

The report for Semester 1 is different in organisation and structure to past reports.  The reason for this is clearly explained in the report.

This report provides you with information about your child's learning during Semester 1, 2020.  It reflects that learning during Semester 1 has been both school-based and home-based due to COVID-19.  During Term 2 the priority for learning has been Religious Education, English and Mathematics.  This report provides information on your child's achievement in these priority areas.  The school will organise opportunities for your to child's progress.

This report reflects the changes that the school has had to adopt in order to manage the “changing landscape” effected by Covid-19.
In previous reports, students were given a specific grade for Achievement.  The grades were as follows:

For this semester, the Achievement Code has changed to the following:

This means that your child will receive one of three grades for their achievement.  They are either:
Working Towards
Working At
Working Beyond                     …..expected outcomes for your child’s grade level.

Students in Kindergarten do not get an Achievement Code.  They are given an Effort Code for the Key Learning Areas.

Students were also given a specific grade for Effort.  Those grades were as follows:

The Effort Code for the current Semester 1 Reports, remains the same.

Should you have any questions about the report, the Parent Teacher Interviews are a wonderful opportunity to clarify any queries.  The Parent Teacher Interviews are being held over the next two weeks.  Thank you to all the parents who have returned their Parent Observation Form and booked a time for the interview.

Have a great weekend,
Marisa Bombardieri

Religious Education

This week Year 5 students have prepared and celebrated a class Mass which was held in the school library.  There is no better way to understand The Eucharist than to prepare for it from scratch. Complete with teaching aides and a great story, Fr John compared friendship to salt and pepper shakers. This was an analogy that the students could really relate to. Thank you also to Fr John Sullivan for preparing for. and presiding at. this very special Eucharistic celebration.

Our Year 3 students, their parents and teachers are preparing for their First Holy Communion.  Please remember them in your prayers.

Could we also remember in our prayers Mr Steve Foresto.  The Foresto family are members of our Parish. Many years ago Steve taught at St Kieran’s and his children attended school here. Steve is undergoing cancer treatment and is need of our prayers.

During this COVID 19 time we are celebrating all feast days and special events through different prayer experiences within the school. The Yr 2 video was an example of this. Class Masses for the older students have commenced and will continue with Yrs 5, 4 and later in the term Yr 3.  Our younger grades will prepare and celebrate small liturgies which link to their Bible studies in their classrooms as the term progresses.

     Religious Education Coordinator.

School Readiness - Home based learning resources for Pre-schoolers

If your 4 or 5-year-old has been unable to attend preschool over the last couple of months, you may be concerned that they are missing out on developing some of the key skills needed to start school. Starting kindergarten is a new adventure for you and your child.  It is important that they are excited and proud to walk through the classroom door, ready to take their place in the ‘big kids’ school.

The Catholic Schools Office of Broken Bay has developed a range of resources featuring some helpful tips to assist you in preparing your child at home for kindergarten. Our Getting Ready booklet outlines a range of learning tools, each supported by an educational video, that will assist in helping to develop the necessary skills in your child to ensure a successful start to their schooling. To see our school readiness video tools please click here.

To receive your FREE getting ready bag including booklet and other fun activities please contact our school office to arrange for collection.
