Italian Day

29 November 2019

Dear Families

Monday’s swimming carnival was a great success. Congratulations to Lachlan D in Year 5 who broke a fourteen-year-old record. Many thanks to the parent volunteers for your invaluable assistance and congratulations to Miss Channell for organising her first swimming carnival!

Yesterday St Kieran’s celebrated Italian Day with pizza, gelato and an entertaining performance by all students who study Italian. A lot of time and effort goes in to making these days possible; a special thank you to the parents and grandparents who helped serve the food at lunch and especially to Maestra Pellegrino with her efforts in producing a memorable production.

As I mentioned in last week’s newsletter, teachers are looking at classes for 2020 as well as writing reports, competing assessments and preparing for the pressures of the last few weeks of school. At present, I am finalising staffing arrangements for next year and plan to announce classroom teachers in next week’s newsletter.

In recent days, I have become aware of an online game called Roblox. While the game is relatively harmless, it has components that allow players to trade items at a cost. Some of these costs can add up and may be a surprise to parents. As with all online activity with children, I strongly encourage you to be familiar with what your child may be playing (if allowed) and what risks may be associated with the game. The potential risk of cyberbullying is always there in the form of exclusion, inappropriate conversation or targeting. Please take a moment to see how your child may be using technology and they feel safe.

Next week is a big one in the calendar. The P&F meeting is on Tuesday evening in The Hub starting at 7pm. The Junior and Senior bands will be holding their performance in the library at 6pm the same evening. The Broken Bay Sports Council Awards are on Saturday evening with Philippa Q. receiving an award for her outstanding achievements. Thursday night is Dads’ Curry Night followed by Carols on Friday evening!

Significant dates for 2020 are being placed in the Compass Calendar at present. Some of these will also be added to the newsletter for your reference. The calendar can be accessed through the Compass app or through the Compass portal on your PC.

Semester Two Reports 2019

Our Semester Two Reports for 2019 will be available on Compass.  This will make it easy for parents to access their child’s report and as your child moves through Primary School, it will be easy to access all the reports from your child’s schooling journey.

We’d advise all parents to print out reports from the Compass website and keep a copy as once your child leaves St Kieran’s, access to the Compass website will cease.  Therefore, as reports are made available on Compass it would be a good idea to download, print and keep a hard copy at home.

Below (or here) are some instructions as to how you can view and download the reports.  Reports this year will be available from Friday 13 December

Enjoy your weekend

SCHOOL  NEWS

Religious Education

Mission in Action.
God sent his son on a Mission to bring his kingdom of peace, love, joy and justice to the world and to spread the good news that God loves us. The apostles continued this Mission by travelling to the ends of the earth. The members of the early Church continued this Mission as we do today.

Over the last few weeks many members of our school community have embraced the Mission of our Church.

Year 5 students have welcomed the 2020 Kindergarten children both in the school playground environment and at a parish celebration.  Thank you to the parents and teachers for assisting in the preparations of these events.

Stage 3 students have participated in the Sacrament of Reconciliation focusing on the peace that forgiveness can bring is such an important lesson. We thank the priest of our parish, Fr Dave, Fr John and Fr Paul for facilitating this Sacrament.

Years 2 to 4 have also been on a mission, bringing joy to the elderly residents in the nursing home across the road. I was impressed with the students' ability to introduce themselves and engage in conversation with the residents. They were a credit to our school community.
Christmas Carols
The joyful sound of carols echoes around the school as students prepare for our carols evening next Friday. In order to make our celebration as safe as possible we request that all children remain with their family at all times. Students will be called to gather in front of the bubblers prior to their carol. We request that parents bring a picnic dinner to share on the grass area. In order to enable everyone to see we ask that only low chairs and picnic rugs be brought into the playground. Gates will open at 5.30pm. The school band will play in the area outside the canteen from 5.30 – 6.00pm.  Carolling will commence at 6.00pm. We request that no alcohol be bought into the playground.  Our safety officers for the evening are our Kindergarten parents. They will be wearing fluro vests. Please listen to their directions.

Yours in Religious Education,
Mrs Kerrie Wetzlar

Author Visit - Gary Eck

We are very lucky to have Gary Eck the author and comedian come to St Kieran’s School to chat about his fantastic new children’s book, ‘Wake Up, Sleepyhead’. Students in K-2 will have the opportunity to listen to Gary talk about his debut children’s book and hear all about the creative process involved in writing and publishing a children’s picture book. Gary will be at our school on Wednesday December 4 (week 8) and there is an opportunity for the students to purchase a signed copy of his new book on the day. Payments of cash or direct payment (see attached) will be accepted. I will also have copies of ‘Wake Up, Sleepyhead’ for sale in the library on the day. We look forward to this wonderful opportunity for the students to meet a real-life author!

2020 Band Program

In 2020 we are excited to introduce Evergreen music to St Kieran’s. Evergreen Music is owned and operated by Ben Marshall and Debora Mauro. Ben Marshall was the Parish Youth minister for many years at St Kieran’s and has a close association both the parish and school. Many St Kieran’s students already attend Evergreen Music in Brookvale, where the philosophy is to “learn to play music, learn to love music, and be a musician for life” Please see the linked flyer for information regarding the “mixed ensemble program”

Students in Years 2 – 5 will have the opportunity to trial an instrument on Monday 9 December at school.

Calling All New Altar Servers

Over the past few years our Masses and celebrations have been enhanced by the services of the Altar Server. The traits of an Altar Server include reverence and common sense. Altar Servers receive simple training and are then directed by the senior server as to what to do and when.

Next week we will be training students from Yrs. 3-5 who wish to learn how to be a Junior Altar Server. This will be one lunchtime session. I will be taking interested students to the Church for training with one of our Parish Deacons. I will be in attendance throughout all the training.

Students who attend training will be asked to serve on the altar at our school Masses and Liturgies. We usually do this on a roster depending on which class is preparing the celebration. Whilst in the sacristy the children are always accompanied by myself or a female parishioner.

If you decide to make a commitment to the Parish Altars Serving Roster you will need to let the parish office know and I can give you the details of who to call.

Learning how to be an altar server is a good way to understand and know the Mass. If you wish your child learns how to serve at Mass please complete the linked details.

Kind regards,
Mrs Wetzlar

Rabbit - Free to a Good Home
Caramello is looking for a new loving family to care for him. He is a five year old medium sized MALE lop eared rabbit who loves pats and attention.

He was purchased from a pet store, however he may or may not be de sexed. He has lived happily in our yard (in his hutch) for the past 5 years and is no trouble. Please contact the school office if you are looking for a new pet.
