Dear Parents

There is a great sense of excitement in the lead up to tonight’s St Kieran’s Cocktail Evening. It has been quite a while since we have been able to gather socially as a whole school community and I firmly believe that this will be a wonderful opportunity to strengthen the ties that bind our community. There will be approximately a hundred people in attendance in a lovely location. Many thanks to all those who have worked so hard behind the scenes to make tonight happen.

Parenting Ideas
Every few weeks our school receives an article from one of Australia’s leading parent educators, Michael Grose. These can be found as links in the newsletters or attachments on our school website. This week’s article strongly resonated with me; childhood and teenage anxiety, something that is often overlooked by adults. I would encourage you to read the article and to consider the points Michael makes when responding to a child or teenager. While you are at it, you may wish to look back on some of the other excellent articles on our website or past newsletters.

Parents and Friends
Our Parents and Friends Meeting was held last Monday evening. Among the topics of discussion were ideas for fundraising and how the funds might be spent. We also discussed the introduction of an optional summer and winter girls’ uniform, which includes the option of pants in winter and shorts in summer. Some ideas from these discussions will be communicated with the wider community soon.

200 Years
The celebration of 200 years of Catholic education in Australia was held on Monday with a representation from St Kieran’s. Father Dave ensured that the Mass was meaningful for our students and the others present. We plan on commemorating the event with the whole school at a Monday assembly before the end of term. Thank you to Mrs Wetzlar and Father Dave for preparing this special occasion.

Athletics Carnival
The carnival was a great success on Monday with the weather being very kind to us! Congratulations to all the students for their enthusiasm and efforts in running and competing in the field events. A special thank you to all our parent helpers, and to Mrs Middleton and Mr Labone, for organising such a great day.

God bless,

Vinnies Winter Sleepout
Preparation is well underway for the Stage 3 'Vinnies Winter Sleep Out’ on Friday 4 June. Students are engaging with the ‘Head, Heart and Hands’ Service Learning model to explore the topic of homelessness. First finding out about the facts, head. Next looking through the eyes of the Gospel, heart. Finally doing something about the problem, hands, in the guise of our winter sleep out.

Mr John McCarney, a representative of our local St Vincent De Paul group, spoke with Stage 3 yesterday sharing with them some stories of the homeless in our area and the many reasons people find themselves homeless. He also spoke of the assistance we can offer those less fortunate than ourselves. From giving blankets and gifts of warm clothing to paying the electricity bill that provides warmth, our donations to SVDP Winter Appeal help many families and people in our area. Thank you, John, for facts and stories about homelessness in our area.

Next week the Mission Team will share facts about homelessness with all classes in the school and we ask that every family contributes in some way. We encourage Stage 3 students to do odd jobs around the home to raise a donation to SVDP Winter Appeal. It would be more meaningful to the children if they were to work for their donation towards the Winter Appeal. Boxes will be left outside the front office for donations of warm clothing or blankets and parents may wish to donate to the Winter Appeal via a donation through Qkr.  Knowing what a generous school community we are I thank you in anticipation of your involvement in the SVDP Winter Appeal.

Confirmation
Please remember in our prayers our Year 3 students who have commenced learning about the Sacrament of Confirmation in their classroom. Soon parents, through the Parish Sacramental Program, will continue the faith journey of the children.

Teacher Prayer - An Attitude of Gratitude
Several times during each term the teachers gather for prayer in one of our classrooms. Mr Huskins prepared prayer this morning with a theme of Gratitude. One part of our prayer was to read statements he had gathered from our students written with an attitude of gratitude. We have linked some of these beautiful affirmations for you to read. It was a great start to our day.

Yours in Religious Education,
     Mrs Kerrie Wetzlar

Athletics Carnival

On Monday 24 May we held our athletics carnival at the Sydney Academy of Sport and Recreation. It was fantastic to be back at the track this year. Students competed with great sportsmanship and team spirit. The Sports Team leaders did a great job leading war cries and a warm-up dance to get the students hyped and ready for action. We would also like to thank all the parent volunteers. The day would not have been possible without your help. Ribbons will be distributed at assembly on Monday 7 June (Week 8) once the shot put competition has been held at the oval. All students registered for shot put should wear their sports uniform on Wednesday 2 June (Week 7).
