Dear Families

Today we farewell Jo Nesbitt who has been canteen manager for the past five years, and a bit! Jo has been a wonderful asset to our school and although we said our goodbyes last year, Jo has graciously continued in the role until we found a successful replacement. We welcome to our St Kieran’s community Hannah Davidson who has been employed as canteen manager as of next week.

Year 3 boys visited St Paul’s College, Manly on Tuesday along with other boys from peninsula Catholic schools. I received praises from the teachers, principal and deputy principal about our boys and received great feedback from the boys themselves. Congratulations boys on being great ambassadors for our school.

This week, both St Paul’s and St Augustine’s colleges have held open days for prospective families. Both schools give students from St Kieran’s preferred entry based on their respective enrolment policies. I would be very happy to speak with any family that is considering either school. St Kieran’s is fortunate to have a very good relationship with both schools that allows for great insight to the strengths of both schools.

Our Brekkie for Bushfires last Friday raised over $1200 for the St Vincent de Paul appeal. Thank you once again to the P&F and all the volunteers that helped on the day.

A reminder that the first Parents and Friends meeting will be held on Monday evening at 7pm in The Hub. This is a great opportunity to hear about the various happenings around the school, including fundraising initiatives, school promotion and the School Improvement Plan (SIP).

Thank you to the Environment Leaders, and to all our students, on their Clean Up Australia Day efforts yesterday.

Michael Gallagher
Principal

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data

Parents received a letter via email this week, regarding the NCCD.  This letter was sent to all families regardless of whether their child is included in the NCCD or not.  The collection of data for the NCCD is an Australian Government initiative and it is something that ultimately assists in the distribution of Commonwealth funding.

Our Learning Support program at St Kieran’s supports all student needs whether they are part of the NCCD or not.  Our procedures include the gathering of data on student progress, meetings held with teachers/learning support teacher, consultation with parents via phone and formal meetings or letters.  From these processes adjustments are made for students in order to best meet their learning needs.  Not all students who receive support are included in the NCCD.  As outlined in the NCCD letter that was sent home, you’ll have the opportunity to ask whether your child is included in the NCCD at the Parent/Teacher interview which will be held later this term.

The teachers participated in Grade Meetings today.  They met with me (as Learning Support Teacher) and Michael Gallagher to analyse the learning needs of their 2020 class.  The analysis is based on data that has been collated during the first few weeks of this term.  From this data, teachers identify an avenue of support or extension for specific students and I can support teachers and students as the Learning Support Teacher.  Our meetings were a great opportunity to work together planning for the best learning opportunities for our students.

Religious Education

Students from Years 2-6 participated with enthusiasm and reverence at our Ash Wednesday Mass. Year 5 students expressively proclaimed the Scriptures, dramatically depicted the Gospel and led us in the Prayers of the Faithful. Year 5 girls lead the congregation to new heights in participation through singing. Let us not forget to thank Fr Paul and Ian Woodbury for always making themselves available to preside and assist at our Masses. A huge thank you to Miss Kassis, Miss Williams and Year 5 for their thoughtful preparation and reverent prayerfulness at the Mass of Ash Wednesday.

Mrs Janette Davidson, Parish Sacramental Coordinator, has prepared a list of positive Lenten experiences. “Nurturing Faith Series” lists a range of simple family-based activities that can fit into everyone’s day. Thank you Janette for sharing this resource.

Also linked are two Lenten calendars that may provoke conversation and thought in your family. Please take a peek at these resources and see if they suit your family.

Project Compassion boxes went home to the eldest in each family today. Should you require additional Project Compassion boxes for your home or workplace place, don’t hesitate to ask at the office.

Over the next week students will be moving from their first module of learning to their Lent and Easter modules. Year 3 have a big few weeks ahead of them as they prepare for their First Reconciliation. Please keep these children and their families in your prayers.

Yours in Religious Education,
     Mrs Kerrie Wetzlar

Year 3 Boys St Paul's Excursion

At St Paul’s we had a super day! We made ANZAC biscuits, but my favourite was science. We tested acids and bases and made sherbet… YUM! After, we went back to school. Best Year 3 day ever! Ian, 3S

Yesterday we went to St Paul's and it was so fun! We went in and went straight to sport. We did soccer, cricket, AFL, basketball and rugby passing. Then we went to recess and it was different to our recess. We had to pick up a bag of food and drink. Then after we did that we went to cooking and we baked ANZAC biscuits. Then we went to science and learned about acids and bases. It was a great day. Harrison, 3S

It was cool and really good! I loved science and cooking. I might like to go to St Paul’s when I am older because we had such a great day. Kalan, 3W

I liked that St Paul’s was super big and it was interesting to see the Year 11 and 12 boys around the school. It was really cool watching the experiment of Elephant Toothpaste too! James, 3W

Wayside Chapel Undies Drive

It’s your last chance to bring in new undies for the Wayside Chapel’s Undies Drive.  The Wayside Chapel chooses February for the drive which supports the homeless. The most common size needed is men’s XL however any size will be happily accepted.  Donations will be collected next Monday 2 March so if you can spare a pair they will be gratefully accepted.  Please place in the container outside the school office.  A big thank you to those who have already donated.
Wendy Rose, Karen Hughes, Nick Labone and the Mission Team.

Learning Together Play Group

Last Tuesday we had our first Learning Together Play Group for the year. We welcomed visitors from local pre-schools, as well as younger siblings of current students. As it was Strove Tuesday they were treated to a morning tea of shaped pancakes and fresh fruit.

Italian Food for Thought

As we know, this week we celebrated Ash Wednesday or Mercoledi Ceneri as we refer to it in Italian!

Leading up to this significant date on our liturgical calendar,  in Italian class we learn about Carnevale and this time of celebration before Lent and its connection to Lent and Easter. As part of this learning Stage 3 got to sample some delicious Italian festive treats 'Crostoli' or 'Chiacchiere di Carnevale' - thin fried pastries that sound like 'chiacchiere' or 'little gossips' when you crunch into them!

They proved to be a hit!

Thank you to Tre Punte Caffe in Five Dock

A dopo,
Maestra Fabiola

Dads' Curry Night

The first Curry Night will kick off in Manly as it's always a good  place to start  with The Steyne, then on to Ashianas.

There are plenty of places to visit afterwards if you get a long leave pass for the night.

So please put Friday 20 March in your diaries - 6pm onwards kick off and 7.30pm at Ashiana.

Of course a few kids left St Kieran’s last year and are off to new schools, however our Curry Night has an alumni, and old dads are more than welcome, and in fact, encouraged  to come along.

All new Kindy dads are especially invited.
Any questions please let me know.  Look forward to catching up,

Children's Liturgy

The children’s liturgy ministry is always looking for new mums, grandparents and carers to be involved in this wonderful and rewarding ministry.  Being a volunteer in this ministry involves helping with children’s liturgy that takes place on Sundays at the churches of St Cecilia and St Kieran’s.  You will be placed on roster alongside another volunteer who is currently doing children’s liturgy to help out about once to twice a term.  Children’s liturgy only takes place within the school term and doesn’t take place when year family masses are scheduled.  All information, resources and activities are printed off and provided by the children’s liturgy co-ordinator on a weekly basis.  All volunteers will be required to obtain a working with children check number, but this is simple to do, and this is something that I can help you obtain.   If you feel like this is something you could get involved with or would simply like more information, please feel free to contact me on 0403 063 013 or at bryannecrabb@gmail.com
