Dear Parents

Today’s Athletics Fun Day was a great success. From Kindergarten through to Year 6, all students enjoyed their time at the oval taking part in running events as well as the variety of ball games and novelties. The Sports Leaders assisted with judging, helping out with games and assisting where needed. Fortunately, the magpies left our carnival alone, instead focusing on cyclists or runners out on their own! Many thanks to Mr Labone, Mrs Middleton, all the teachers and the Sports Leaders for making the day a great success.

I would like to express my gratitude to the many families that took time to complete the survey which closed on Monday afternoon. The School Advisory Council will be meeting in the next week to discern and discuss the feedback and look at ways that we can plan for the future at St Kieran’s, keeping in mind the new strategic plan for Catholic Schools Broken Bay called Towards 2025. I will keep you informed of our progress during the remainder of the year.

Congratulations to the first group of Year 3 students who made their First Communion last weekend. The Parish has been very accommodating in putting on extra Masses to allow the children to take part in this special Sacrament. Please keep in your prayers those children making their First Communion this weekend.
Thank you to the Otis family for the donation of movie memorabilia to the school. This will be used in the next couple of weeks for our St Kieran’s Feast Day celebrations.

Today is the Feast of St Augustine, the patron of the priests of our Parish. We are very fortunate to have a close connection to a community that is supportive of our school and parish community. Thank you to Father Dave and all the Augustinians who serve our community.

God Bless

Our teachers engage in an extra ten hours of professional learning each term.  This ensures that we remain cognisant of, and up to date with, current pedagogical theories, guiding our focus to maximise success for each student across all Key Learning Areas.

This term, one area of focus has been aspects of Literacy and how we plan the structure of an effective Literacy Block.

Our Literacy Policy contains the following statement about our approach:
At St Kieran’s School we endorse the Broken Bay Diocesan Literacy Statement ‘Foundational Beliefs’:
  • It is a fundamental right of all students to be literate.
  • All students can achieve high standards given the right time, support and opportunity.
  • High expectations and early and ongoing intervention are essential.
  • All teachers can teach to high standards given the right assistance.
  • Teachers need to be able to articulate what they do and why they teach the way they do.
By ensuring that we meet regularly to discuss and evaluate our practices in Literacy we can be confident our teachers are supported to teach to high standards.  The opportunity to reflect on and articulate how we plan for and program all aspects of Literacy is crucial to the best possible learning for all students.

In addition to this, we believe that a daily structured, uninterrupted block of time allocated to the teaching of English is key to ensuring that important components of learning and teaching English can be successfully structured in a meaningful and purposeful way.

Pedagogical beliefs that underpin our approach ensure consistency.  Approaches such as, whole class, small group, partner and individual activities so following the “Gradual Release of Responsibility” model.
We value the opportunities to learn and reflect as a group of professionals.  Professional learning is a positive way to ensure we maintain high standards.

Have a good weekend,
    Marisa Bombardieri
    Assistant Principal

Religious Education

Congratulations to our Year 3 students who have completed their First Holy Communion. This weekend eight more students will make their First Holy Communion.

In order to celebrate this Sacrament, our priests have put on extra Masses in order to safely accommodate our children and their families. We extend a thank you to our priests for their time and energy. Thank you to the students' teachers who have given up their weekends to support their students on their faith journey.

Today is the Feast of Augustine of Hippo. Theologian, philosopher and Doctor of the Church, Augustine’s thinking has greatly influenced the perceptions and practice of many Christian religions. Augustine ministered to the people of Hippo, North Africa.

In the same way, our own Augustinian priests serve and walk with the parishioners of North Harbour Parish, including our schools.  Today, as we remember St Augustine's Feast Day, let us also recognise and thank the men from the Order of St Augustine who guide and enrich our own faith journey.

Today students will be reading and viewing texts about the life of St Augustine. We will celebrate St Augustine’s life in our community prayers on Monday morning.

Yours in Religious Education
    Mrs Kerrie Wetzlar

A Good News Story

An email to the school from a bus passenger. . . . . . . .

Hi team at St.Kieran's,

I just want to say a huge thank you to the young gentleman who this morning, lifted up the seat on the bus so I could sit there with my daughter in her pram. We were on the 178x and I got off at Manly Leagues Club. I think he would be a year 6 student? I said thank you to him on the bus, but I hope that you can pass on a thank you to him again from me and also thank you to St Kieran's and more so, his parents for raising a young helpful gentleman.

Kind regards,
Stephanie

Congratulations Braylon - you are a star!!
