Reconciliation Week 27 May - 3 June
At its heart, reconciliation is about strengthening relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous peoples, for the benefit of all Australians. For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, Australia’s colonial history is characterised by devastating land dispossession, violence, and racism. Over the last half century, however, many significant steps towards reconciliation have been taken. Reconciliation is an ongoing journey that reminds us that while generations of Australians have fought hard for meaningful change, future gains are likely to take just as much, if not more, effort.
In the key Learning Area of History, Reconciliation between all peoples is explored and taught. In the early years K-2 children talk about getting on with each other and “acceptance and celebration of differences between all people.” BOS In Years 3 & 4 “students identify the importance of Country to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and explain the impact of British settlement in Australia.” BOS . The theme of reconciliation between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples is further developed in Years 5 & 6 where “students explore the factors that led to Federation and trace experiences of democracy and citizenship over time, including the struggles of various groups for rights and freedoms including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.” BOS
In addition to our ongoing Religious and Historical input towards promoting justice, respect and peace between all peoples, Reconciliation Week will be featured and celebrated through specific activities in our classrooms. Students will be reading some beautiful picture books which prompt discussion about reconciliation. Older students will be viewing ‘Behind the New’ clips which focus on reconciliation. Age-appropriate activities will follow, some of which will be displayed around the school. Next week provides a wonderful opportunity for parents to follow up at home with reconciliation in the family and discussion about reconciliation between all peoples, especially with the first peoples of Australia
Students in our Catholic schools have a unique perspective of reconciliation as they also investigate reconciliation, saying sorry and making peace in their Religious Education. Based on the stories and teachings of Jesus regarding offering and accepting forgiveness Catholic school students have an awareness of the importance of making peace and improving relationships between people.
Yours in Religious Education
