Professional Learning

As each term ends, we put together a plan for the following term regarding the professional learning for our teachers.  As I mentioned a few weeks ago, teachers undertake ten hours of professional learning each term.  The content of the learning is drawn from identified school needs as well as some compliance requirements.

For Term 4 our professional learning will include, further work on the focus in Literacy that we have worked on this term.  It will also include data analysis.  As a staff, we will look closely at the data collated from the completion of the PAT Reading Comprehension Test (Years 2-6) and the PAT Mathematics Test* (Years 1-6).  We will also be revisiting the tracking of specific students’ progress throughout the year and exploring further ways to continue supporting student growth in achievement.  The school’s Learner Diversity Policy will be revisited with the staff as will the Behaviour Policy. The staff will spend some time preparing for the MAI Assessment that will be administered to the students on their return early in 2021.

Finally, for compliance purposes, the staff will complete a two-hour CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation) course conducted by the San College of Education at Adventist Healthcare.

These professional learning sessions are vital in keeping our school’s coordinated approach to the best learning and teaching that we can provide our students.

*PAT Mathematics will be held during Week 1 of Term 4.

Enjoy the holidays!

Religious Education

As Term 3 draws to a conclusion and I review our feast of Feast Days, First Holy Communion, Family celebrations and Religious Education teaching I see two ‘take away’ learnings from our term.

The first is to ‘do’ prayer differently.

  • Our older students have enjoyed intimate Class Masses where the children have prepared the celebration and participated at a deeper and more thoughtful level. For this we must thank Fr John Sullivan O.S.A. our teachers and children.
  • Through the use of video, we were able to celebrate Grandparents Day and Father’s Day. Families members who are separated due to distance or ill health were able to share the good wishes and prayers from their children and grandchildren.
  • First Communion took on a whole new look this term. Smaller and quieter, Masses which focused solely on the First Communion children were particularly reflective, giving the children time to absorb the special occasion.

Reviewing the way we celebrate Feast Days is a second ‘take away’ from the term.

  • As we were unable to pop over to the church for a whole school celebration of feast days, students took on a more scholarly approach.  Teachers and students explored why we acknowledge Saints and their contribution to our Church. Children extended their learning about the life of the Saint to ask the question “So what?” or “How might this apply to my life?”
  • Switching our annual Children’s Fair to a Fun Games Morning was a highlight for many. Playing together in our year groups and moving through the activities as a whole school, built community spirit and a sense of normality.

May I conclude by thanking our Priest of the Parish for their continual support of our students, teachers and Catholic Education. From putting on extra Masses to facilitate a COVID safe First Communion to almost weekly school visits to our classrooms the Augustinians have been there for the faith journey of our Catholic learning community.

I am also in awe of my wonderful and creative colleagues, as we have had to re -think the manner in which ‘do’ things. The teachers have taken on teaching and learning with diligence to course content and empathy toward their students.

Yours in Religious Education

    Mrs Kerrie Wetzlar
