Dear Families

We begin Fallow Week (Week 7 of each term) with the school swimming carnival at the Andrew “Boy” Charlton Pool in Manly. The forecast is for a very warm but partly cloudy day. Even though the children will be under cover during most of the day, sunscreen will need to be applied regularly.  Please ensure your child has their own sunscreen, especially if they are allergic to particular brands. The school will have pump packs of sunscreen available for each colour house. It will be the “Ombra 50+” brand. A reminder to have your child’s name marked off if leaving before the end of the carnival however, I encourage you to stay as long as possible to support all swimmers.

This morning I attended the 90th Anniversary Mass at St Cecilia’s Primary School, our sister school of the North Harbour Parish. Congratulations to Mrs Fran Taylor, staff and students on this significant occasion.

Ms Surrey Hodges, band conductor for the past six years, has decided to move on to new adventures and as a result, we are in negotiations with a new band contractor. We will be able to tell you more about this in the next week or so. Thank you to Ms Hodges for your contribution to the St Kieran’s Band Program over the last few years.

Next year we will begin a Science Club one morning per week. The scientist in charge has a PhD in immunology and parasitology and has established clubs in some of our local Catholic and public schools. More information is included in the newsletter. Places will be limited.

Teachers are meeting over the next few weeks to consider the planning for 2020 class groupings.  So much needs to be taken into account when this type of planning occurs.  Classes need to be academically balanced and students’ social and emotional needs taken into account.  Teachers work collaboratively using their professional judgement, to discuss and place children with the class and teacher that is the “best fit”.  Students are included as part of this process.  They are asked to nominate some of the peers they would like to have in their class. This process is complex and consideration is given to many factors in making a decision.  Therefore, we ask that this process be respected. Should there be any concerns regarding class placements, they are to be addressed in writing to the principal where due consideration will be given.  Please note that concerns raised should be of a significant nature. With so many factors that influence this process, requests may not always be met.

Congratulations to Jacob B. (2HR) who, along with his mum Erika, was recognised for his participation in a program called Kids Giving Back. It is a charity whose mission is to create the next “generation of generosity”. The program is delivered for children 6-18 years old and their families and offers opportunities to assist vulnerable people in the community. Well done Jacob.

Semester Two Reports 2019

Our Semester Two Reports for 2019 will be available on Compass.  This will make it easy for parents to access their child’s report and as your child moves through Primary School, it will be easy to access all the reports from your child’s schooling journey.

We’d advise all parents to print out reports from the Compass website and keep a copy as once your child leaves St Kieran’s, access to the Compass website will cease.  Therefore, as reports are made available on Compass it would be a good idea to download, print and keep a hard copy at home.

Below (or here) are some instructions as to how you can view and download the reports.  Reports this year will be available from Friday 13 December

Enjoy your weekend

SCHOOL  NEWS

Christmas Carols Friday 6 December 6pm - in the School Grounds

A reminder that the canteen will not be open this year and there is no car park drop off.  There will only be limited parking in the carpark.

For safety reasons, Santa will remain on the first-floor verandah area of the school.  Those of you who were there last year will recall how dangerous it was when Santa moved down the stairs.

We look forward to an enjoyable and happy event with our very special St Kieran’s community as we move into Christmas celebrations.

Yours in Religious Education,
Mrs Kerrie Wetzlar

Author Visit - Gary Eck

We are very lucky to have Gary Eck the author and comedian come to St Kieran’s School to chat about his fantastic new children’s book, ‘Wake Up, Sleepyhead’. Students in K-2 will have the opportunity to listen to Gary talk about his debut children’s book and hear all about the creative process involved in writing and publishing a children’s picture book. Gary will be at our school on Wednesday December 4 (week 8) and there is an opportunity for the students to purchase a signed copy of his new book on the day. Payments of cash or direct payment (see attached) will be accepted. I will also have copies of ‘Wake Up, Sleepyhead’ for sale in the library on the day. We look forward to this wonderful opportunity for the students to meet a real-life author!

Nursing Home Visit

As part of the Religious Education program Years 2-4 are visiting Estia Nursing Home over the next several weeks. Part of our Mission Module is to spread the love of God to those around us. This is an experience of ‘Service’ where our children can practise their discipleship in a very real way.

“On Tuesday 4K and 2HR had the opportunity to visit the nursing home across the road. We were giving loving service to the people who were lonely and needed comfort. The Mission was to be kind to the people who wanted love. One of the residents cried because they were so moved by our singing. This was a great experience and I would love to have the opportunity to do this again.”

Italian Day and Assembly

Dear Parents & Guardians,

Ciao a tutti!

Just a friendly reminder that our Italian Day and Assembly is near approaching – Week 7, Thursday 28 November!

Students from grades 3 – 6 will be presenting the Italian Assembly, showcasing diverse aspects of their learning so far.

There are a few things to note:

Attire:
The day will be treated as a normal school day, so all students are to wear their usual school uniform however with a ‘touch of Italian’ – green, white and red – ribbons etc for girls and socks/ties for boys for example.

Assembly Attire:
Students performing have been made aware of specific dress they will require for their assembly Item and they will change into that at the appropriate time. Some students will require particular props/items for their performance also and are responsible for those. Generally, neat and tidy grooming of hair and uniform is required for all or where a specific costume is not necessary.

Look out for notes regarding specific costume requirements for some students next week.

Assembly Concert:
The Italian Concert will take place in the school hall at 11:45 am. All are welcome to attend!

Lunch:
A special Italian inspired lunch of Pizza and Gelato will be on offer via the canteen, so place your orders! Grazie Jo!

Practice Makes Perfect:
Of course, all students have a little something to practise at home for their concert item, but some students may have specific readings to rehearse/lines to say and will be given copies to read over at home.

Thank you for your time and support,

Saluti,
Maestra Fabiola

Junior Altar Servers

Over the past few years our Masses and celebrations have been enhanced by the services of many. Some of those ‘many’ are the Altar Servers. We would like to thank our Year Six Altar Servers who are heading off to high school next year. Sincere thanks to Grace Halloway, Nadia John and Zoe Rigato who, with reverence and common sense, have assisted at school and parish Masses over the years.

Over the next few weeks we will be training students from Yrs 3 -5 who wish to learn how to be a Junior Altar Server. I will be taking interested student to the Church for training with one of our Parish Deacons most probably during lunch time. I will be in attendance throughout all the training.

Students who attend training will be asked to serve on the altar at our school Masses and Liturgies. We usually do this on a roster basis depending on which class is preparing the celebration. Whilst in the sacristy the children are always accompanied by myself or a parishioner. If you decide to make a commitment to the Parish Altars Serving Roster you will need to let the Parish office know and I can give you the details of whom to call.

Learning how to be an altar server is a good way to understand and know the Mass. If you wish your child learn how to serve at Mass please click here to respond.

Kind regards,
Mrs Wetzlar

A Letter from the St Vincent de Paul Society

Re: "Sleep Out' Donation
Once again I am writing to thank you for the wonderful donation made by your students, parents and teachers.  The donation of $1000 reflects the wonderful support that the Society receives from St Kieran's School.  It will be used in the support of the marginalised within our local community.  The Leadership Group and teachers were wonderful in their support.

Your students' donation of over 2000 cans of food during the Winter Appeal, together with some blankets, clothing etc was extraordinary.  They certainly provided the hungry and homeless clients that visited our Brookvale office with a variety unsurpassed.  The transport of the cans by your staff was very appreciated and my back is still grateful.

Sadly I have to apologise for the delay in sending this letter.  Our wonderful Treasurer, Tim Irwin, receipted the donation from banking details but I have just discovered it in planning for the Christmas Appeal and hampers.  Mea Culpa.

Yours in Christ
John McCarney, President.
