Dear Families

During these extraordinary times I can assure you that at St Kieran’s, life is continuing as close to normal as possible. There is a great sense of calm within the community, despite what is occurring around the world. It is vital for the children that this continues, as it is for all of us. I thank our parents for keeping sick children at home and ask that you do so if there is any sign of illness. We will continue to encourage our students to practise safe-hygiene while at school.

There is much debate as to whether schools will close in the near future, or at all. Whatever our personal opinions may be, we follow the advice of the medical experts, who in turn advise governments and education authorities. While school is open, we will be teaching as normal. Some extra-curricular activities may be suspended, such as inter-school sports and visiting providers. If school were to close at some stage, then we would provide work for students. Teachers are busily preparing for this.

There is a heightened level of anxiety everywhere, and school is not immune however, I would like to acknowledge and thank our school staff for their positivity, calmness and hard work during these difficult times. The teachers are consciously making life at school as normal for the students.

Parent/Teacher Interviews will take place next week only. By now, you should have indicated your preference for the interview i.e. face-to-face or via phone. If you are attending a face-to-face interview, I ask that you follow safe, hygienic practices by washing hands, sitting at a minimum distance and opting for a phone interview if you are unwell. Phone interviews will be audio calls only as most teachers will be using their personal mobile phones.

Life has changed for all of us in one way or another, especially for those parents working from home or anyone who is self-isolating at present. Pope Francis delivered a homily during his morning Mass a few days ago where he recognised this change. He focused on the positives that might come out of this, especially for the fact that families will be brought closer together. In his homily he said:
“May the Lord help them discover new ways, new expressions of love, of living together in this new situation. It is a wonderful occasion for rediscovering true affection with creativity in the family. Let us pray for families so that relationships in the family at this time always thrive for the good.”
All parish Masses have been cancelled until further notice, however, the church remains open for anyone who wishes to visit. I would encourage you to visit if you get a chance.

We will endeavor to keep you updated regularly. I ask for your patience and understanding at this time and thank you again for your ongoing support and calmness.

God bless.

Religious Education

We live in unusual times. The Church, our parish, parents, teachers and children at St Kieran’s have all made adjustments to our normal way of life.

With so many cancellations to our liturgies, Masses and celebrations, it is easy to focus on what we are postponing. Let’s flip the coin and focus on what we can do. First Reconciliation for Year 3 will be happening next term, possibly in a different format of a more personalised smaller group approach. The Year Four Family Mass has been rescheduled to later in the year.

Holy Week Liturgies, usually a whole school celebration and profession of our faith, will also take on a new approach this year. Each class will prepare a liturgy to celebrate in their own classroom. These liturgies will be guided by the teachers but planned and run by the children.
The early Church prayed as family units.

“They continued to pray together, they broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere heart.” Acts 2: 46 – 47

Instead of community Masses, we can focus on the family mealtime. This could be a time to share the Scriptures, share our joys and sorrows and pray together. Small intimate family groups praying together can build family strength and shared purpose.
Instead of reciting the communal prayers of our faith, prayer could become more meditative, reflective and personal.

The following links give practical advice about family prayer.

However, you choose to modify your prayer life, know that you are not alone.
“Where two or three are gathered in my name, know that I am there amongst you” Matthew 18: 20

Yours in Religious Education,

Premier's Reading Challenge

The Premier’s Reading Challenge has commenced and students are now able to logon and enter their books. If your child has a logon from previous years, this may still be used. If your child doesn’t know or has forgotten their logon, their class teacher has a copy of them.

A new feature to the site is the PRC Student Site, making it much easier to navigate and search for and add books.

For further information on the PRC, go to their website.

Please note that the PRC closes on Friday 28 August.

Good luck and happy reading!

School Banking

School bankig is currently suspended until further notice.

Sacramental Program News

First Reconciliation Postponed
A communication from Fr Dave was sent to all parents with children in the program this week to inform them that in light of the current concerns about COVID-19 and the need to ensure a safe environment for all, particularly our children, we have decided to postpone the First Reconciliation liturgies at this time.

We have not yet decided on alternative dates as we will need to monitor the changing situation in relation to COVID-19.

Remaining dates for the 2020 and 2021 Sacramental Program are unchanged at this time; you will be advised of any adjustments in coming weeks.
