Dear Families

Welcome back to Term 4. I hope your family was able to spend time together, either on holiday or around the local area. After such a busy term, it was important for the students to have some rest before the final term of the year.

During the spring break, Pope Francis appointed the fourth bishop of Broken Bay, the Most Reverend Anthony Randazzo. Bishop Randazzo grew up in Queensland but was originally from Sydney. He has been an auxiliary bishop in the Sydney Archdiocese for the past three years. We look forward to welcoming him in the future to our school community.

Teachers from both parish schools i.e. St Cecilia’s and St Kieran’s, united on Monday to explore in greater depth the place of the Eucharist in our faith and how we can share this sacrament in other ways with our school communities. We thank Father John Sullivan OSA and Father Dave Austin OSA for their contribution, as well as Mrs Wetzlar who prepared a great part of the day.

St Paul’s College Manly, who celebrate their 90th Anniversary this weekend, contacted St Kieran’s to inform us that three of our past students have been selected as prefects for 2020. They are Anton Callow, Vince Miller and Ryan Hughes. Congratulations to these boys.

The construction of the playground space commenced in the holidays although delayed in starting. Work will continue for the next few weeks and hopefully completed by the end of about Week 3. Unfortunately, we have another broken water pipe that will need repairing this week. This may cause some minor disruption to the playground. Shared Space is also undergoing some repairs that will cause minor disruption.

Welcome back to Mrs Ucchino this term. Ms Pellegrino will be sharing 6U with Mrs Ucchino for the remainder of the year.

I wish you all a productive term ahead.

Religious Education

We Are Mission
‘You are Mission’ is a message for all of us.  Pope Francis wrote ‘Every man and woman is a mission; that is the reason for our life on this earth’. https://www.catholicmission.org.au/our-work/world-mission-appeal-you-are-mission.

Our Mission is to bring God’s peace, justice, joy and love to all people so that all people can live life to the full. Not just an existence but a life to the full. Actually this is God’s mission, handed to Jesus and taken on by his people, the Church.

Learning about Jesus’ mission and our response to mission is the first topic the students will be exploring this term. Studying age appropriate Scripture about Jesus’ words, actions and teachings is the basis for our Mission Modules for the next five-six weeks. Children identify Jesus’ teaching and plan ways in which they can carry on Jesus’ mission of bringing peace, justice, joy and love to those around them.

Next week our Mission Team will represent the school at the Diocesan Mission Mass where they will learn about the role Catholic Mission plays in spreading God’s love to the world.

Mass of Inclusion

On Sunday 1 December, there will be a Mass of Inclusion held at the 9:30am Mass at Our Lady of the Rosary Cathedral, Waitara.  The purpose of this Mass is to be inclusive and welcoming for all, particularly for people who may often not attend Mass due to feeling excluded. All families are invited to attend this special celebration of the Eucharist.

Should anyone require further information please contact the school and we will provide details.

Christmas Carols

Christmas Carols at St Kieran’s was started by, and has been led by, our parent community. At this point we are still in the process of finalising details of our Christmas Carols evening including the date which may change from the original of 6 December.

We will keep you informed and hope to have all details finalised next week.

Swimming Carnival

Dear Parents,

Please click on this link for permission note for the St Kieran's 2019 Swimming Carnival. Please ensure you complete this form ASAP so that your child can be included in the Swimming Carnival program. If, for any reason, your child will not be able to participate in the carnival, please send an email to the school or a note to your child's teacher informing them of this so that we can ensure they are not included in the program.

2020 Opal School Travel

Stay up to date with Opal and ticketing changes.

Applications for student travel in 2020 opened on Friday, 11 October 2019.

Students progressing to Year 3 and Year 7 no longer need to re-apply if they:
  • are continuing at the same school
  • are residing at the same address
  • have not been sent an expiry notification from Transport for NSW.
Where a student meets the new distance eligibility, the system will automatically update their entitlement. If they do not meet the new eligibility, they will receive an expiry notification via email.

Students who have an entitlement approved under a medical condition which is due to expire will receive a notification advising them to re-apply.

Term Bus Pass holders will receive a notification to re-apply.

If students need to update their information or re-apply, they should go online to https://apps.transport.nsw.gov.au/ssts/updateDetails

Applications need to be submitted before 31 December 2019 to ensure student entitlements are updated and their current entitlement/card is not cancelled. If their application is submitted after 31 December 2019, the system will automatically cancel an entitlement/card and a new one will need to be issued.

Students in the Opal network applying for a SSTS or Term Bus Pass entitlement for the first time will receive their card at their nominated postal address. Cards will be mailed out from January 2020.

Volunteers Needed - Return and Earn

The Year 6 Environment Team have encouraged students at St Kieran’s to recycle their canteen purchases of Moove and Nudie juice containers. These containers are taken to a Return Point to earn a refund of 10c per item. Return Points closest to our school are Coles, Manly Vale; Woolworths, Balgowlah and Westfield, Warringah Mall (behind Aldi). We need volunteers to collect the containers from school on a Friday afternoon to take them to a Return Point. If you can help or would like more information, please see me.

Thanking you in anticipation,

Michelle Leydon
(Year 6 Environment Team Mentor & Year 1 Teacher)
