Dear Families
Students in Years 4-6 attended the Remembrance Day Ceremony at Manly Dam on Monday. Illyra G. and the Civics and Citizenship leaders proudly represented St Kieran’s with Illyra presenting a moving speech about the air and sea attacks on Australia in 1942. The Civics and Citizenship leaders then competed against St Cecilia’s in debating on Thursday, which we are proud to say they won!
Congratulations to the three St Kieran’s students who were awarded places in the Catholic Worldview Photograph competition. Aidan C, Tahlia M and Nina F today received their framed photographs as part of their prize.
Last week I wrote of the need for sun protection as the sun gets stronger heading into summer. A reminder that parents are encouraged to apply sunscreen in the morning and provide sunscreen that can remain in the child’s schoolbag for re-application during the day.
The swimming carnival is just over a week away and we are still in need of a few more volunteers. If you are able to assist, even if it is only for part of the day, I would ask that you contact the school office so that you can be added to the list.
The Term 4 P&F Meeting will be held on Tuesday 3 December in The Hub. This is the AGM, but it will also be an opportunity to hear about the 2020-2022 School Improvement Plan and other plans for 2020. The P&F is in need of class parents for Years 3 and 4 going into next year. If you are interested in sharing this role with another parent, please contact the school office for further information.
This Sunday we welcome next year’s Kindergarten students at the Year 5/Kinder Buddy Mass. Every family is welcome to join us for this very special occasion.

Religious Education
We look forward to an enjoyable and happy event with our very special St Kieran’s community as we move into Christmas celebrations.
Students, parents and friends are warmly invited to the 9.30 am Sunday Mass this weekend. At this celebration our Year Five students will welcome Kindergarten 2020 to our Parish and School Family. Thank you to our Year Five families who are participating in the Eucharistic Celebration and in the true style of St Augustine are providing hospitality following Mass.
‘Service Learning’ is learning through service. Service Learning has three aspects. Students first gather information about what is needed, HEAD. They then reflect what Scripture has taught them and think from a Catholic perspective how can we help, HEART. Finally, they choose an action that they think will help, HAND.
Over the next few weeks as part of our Mission Modules students from Years 2- 4 will be visiting the residents at the Estia Nursing home across King Road. Students will be reading, singing and chatting to the residents bringing them cheer and for just a while, tasting the joy of service of others.
Yours in Religious Education,
Mrs Kerrie Wetzlar

Christmas Carols - Friday 6 December 6pm - in the School Grounds
A reminder that the canteen will not be open this year and there is no car park drop off. There will only be limited parking in the carpark.
For safety reasons, Santa will remain on the first-floor verandah area of the school. Those of you who were there last year will recall how dangerous it was when Santa moved down the stairs.
We look forward to an enjoyable and happy event with our very special St Kieran’s community as we move into Christmas celebrations.
Yours in Religious Education,
Mrs Kerrie Wetzlar

Debating
On Thursday the Civics and Citizenship Team represented St Kieran's in a debate against St Cecilia's on the topic 'Social Media does more Harm than Good'. St Kieran's were the negative team and presented well-formed arguments to support their position, winning the debate. Thank you to St Cecilia's for hosting the debate and to their debating team for presenting a convincing debate. Congratulations to Civics and Citizenship Team on your effort and preparation.

Junior Altar Servers
Over the past few years our Masses and celebrations have been enhanced by the services of many. Some of those ‘many’ are the Altar Servers. We would like to thank our Year Six Altar Servers who are heading off to high school next year. Sincere thanks to Grace Halloway, Nadia John and Zoe Rigato who, with reverence and common sense, have assisted at school and parish Masses over the years.
Over the next few weeks we will be training students from Yrs 3-5 who wish to learn how to be a Junior Altar Server. I will be taking interested students to the Church for training with one of our Parish Deacons most probably during lunch time. I will be in attendance throughout all the training.
Students who attend training will be asked to serve on the altar at our school Masses and Liturgies. We usually do this on a roster basis depending on which class is preparing the celebration. Whilst in the sacristy the children are always accompanied by myself or a parishioner. If you decide to make a commitment to the Parish Altars Serving Roster you will need to let the parish office know and I can give you the details of whom to call.
Learning how to be an altar server is a good way to understand and know the Mass. If you wish your child learn how to serve at Mass please click here to respond.
Kind regards,
Mrs Wetzlar

Scholastic Book Fair
What a huge success the Book Fair was this year! Many thanks to all the families who visited the Book Fair and purchased books and goodies. Thanks also to those families who purchased a book to donate to the school. I would also like to send out a HUGE thanks to the amazing parents, teachers and of course the Library Team who helped before, during and after the Book Fair.
We are very lucky to have Gary Eck the author and comedian come to St Kieran’s School to chat about his fantastic new children’s book, ‘Wake Up, Sleepyhead’. Students in K-2 will have the opportunity to listen to Gary talk about his debut children’s book and hear all about the creative process involved in writing and publishing a children’s picture book. Gary will be at our school on Wednesday December 4 (week 8) and there is an opportunity for the students to purchase a signed copy of his new book on the day. Payments of cash or direct payment (see attached) will be accepted. I will also have copies of ‘Wake Up, Sleepyhead’ for sale in the library on the day. We look forward to this wonderful opportunity for the students to meet a real-life author!
Premier’s Reading Challenge
I received an email this week that the certificates for this year’s PRC will arrive soon. As soon as they arrive, they will be awarded to those students who completed the challenge.

Italian Day and Assembly
Dear Parents & Guardians,
Ciao a tutti!
Just a friendly reminder that our Italian Day and Assembly is near approaching – Week 7, Thursday 28 November!
Students from grades 3 – 6 will be presenting the Italian Assembly, showcasing diverse aspects of their learning so far.
There are a few things to note:
Attire:
The day will be treated as a normal school day, so all students are to wear their usual school uniform however with a ‘touch of Italian’ – green, white and red – ribbons etc for girls and socks/ties for boys for example.
Assembly Attire:
Students performing have been made aware of specific dress they will require for their assembly Item and they will change into that at the appropriate time. Some students will require particular props/items for their performance also and are responsible for those. Generally, neat and tidy grooming of hair and uniform is required for all or where a specific costume is not necessary.
Look out for notes regarding specific costume requirements for some students next week.
Assembly Concert:
The Italian Concert will take place in the school hall at 11:45 am. All are welcome to attend!
Lunch:
A special Italian inspired lunch of Pizza and Gelato will be on offer via the canteen, so place your orders! Grazie Jo!
Practice Makes Perfect:
Of course, all students have a little something to practise at home for their concert item, but some students may have specific readings to rehearse/lines to say and will be given copies to read over at home.
Thank you for your time and support,
Saluti,
Maestra Fabiola

Dads' Christmas Curry Night
Thursday 5 December
I will organise a bus to pick us up from school and drop us off as before - normally around 6.30 - 6.45pm.
The cost of the bus is generally about $25 depending on the final numbers.
Dimpys Menu here and includes all food and drink. I believe the guys look after us really well and there's always plenty to eat and drink.
I will need a $50 deposit as per usual, to secure the booking for the restaurant and the bus. (So total will be around $110 all-in)
Again, as always, the invite is open to other dads past and present and who are not on my mailing list.
Look forward to seeing you,
Cheers Howie Tel 043 8888528 E mail howardgiles100@hotmail.com
