Dear Families

Today we celebrate the Feast of St Joseph the Worker, which coincides with International Workers’ Day. During this challenging time we remember and pray for all those workers including doctors, nurses, paramedics and all healthcare professionals who are putting themselves at risk in caring for those who are sick. We also think of those who are keeping essential services running such as supermarkets, emergency services and schools. However, let us pray for those millions of Australians who at present are without work. What can we do to support them during this time?

There is a sense that we are moving closer to that “normal”, maybe sooner than expected. Schools were predicted to be closed until the end of Term 3 and now we are preparing for a gradual return to school from 11 May. As we prepare for this gradual return, I would like to thank our school community for the enormous support that we are receiving from our parents. We understand the huge stress that families are under and we are doing all we can to support our students and families. We look forward to, hopefully sometime soon, when we are back to learning and teaching at school. In the meantime, the teachers are there to support students and parents with the home based learning.

The Catholic Schools Office has put together a webpage to support parents during this time. The Parent Hub COVID-19 has information on HBL, fee relief and FAQs amongst other information. Please take a moment to visit the site.

This week we welcomed Phoebe K and her family to the St Kieran’s School Community and to Year 3. We look forward to meeting you all when we return.

God bless

Remember to be kind to yourself, too

Right now, there is frequent messaging that we’ll make it through the COVID-19 pandemic together. The notion that we’re stronger together and we all just need to be kind to each other is reinforced by our leaders, from celebrities and public figures, and broadcast widely across social media. Yet something is missing from this encouraging messaging set to keep our spirits up and that’s the need to offer kindness within, too.

May God be with you during your day,

Premier's Reading Challenge

With more and more students staying at home now and public places closing in reaction to the coronavirus, families are finding themselves with a lot of time together at home. This is the perfect opportunity for all children to challenge themselves in the Premier’s Reading Challenge.

All students have their own personal log in which the teachers gave out a few weeks ago. Once logged in they can check if the books they have at home are on the booklists. I find it is more accurate to use the actual booklist checklists than the general search option. Students can search for a book using title, author or category. The student site is a very useful tool too.

Once a book is completed it is preferable to enter it straight away onto the student’s online reading record. This will encourage students to keep reading as they see their personal list grow. Younger students will require an adult to help log their books.
At present, it is quite difficult to access hard copies of books but we are able to access some very good online eBooks.

COMMUNITY NEWS

A Safety Request from Northern Beaches Council

In these strange Covid-19 times, many more families than usual are using our shared paths.

This is a very positive thing to do, for so many reasons; exercise, getting out of the house and mental health being some of those reasons.

However, the extra people means that we have to take extra care with our etiquette on shared paths, so that we reduce the risk of injury to ourselves and others.

We would like to share this short Shared Path video, that is on the Northern Beaches Council YouTube channel.

Please note that everyone can still maintain the required 1.5 metres separation while keeping the Shared Path etiquette, such as walking single file in order to keep to the left and allow others to pass in both directions.
