Dear Parents

Reflecting on the first term of the year, I am always astonished at how much has been achieved during the ten weeks. Kindergarten’s first day only seems like yesterday, but how much they have already grown in their learning and with friendships. There have been Masses, liturgies, excursions, sports carnivals, parent meetings and playgroups, just to name a few of the events that have happened in Term 1.

As we come to the end of the last day of term, I hope that you and your family will be able to spend time over the Easter weekend and holiday period resting, travelling and taking part in some of the liturgical events of the parish.

Holy Week

I am extremely grateful for the efforts of the students, under the guidance of their teachers, in the production of the various Holy Week liturgies that have occurred during the week. Each liturgy has been a solemn reflection on Jesus’ journey to the Cross. While other schools may celebrate Easter with hat parades and egg hunts, our focus is on the journey Jesus made during His week of suffering.

Parents and Friends Committee

The new P&F Committee met during the week planning for the year ahead. The short-term focus is on May, which sees Mother’s Day and the St Kieran’s Cocktail Evening as the big events for when we return in Term 2. Please look out for more information in the newsletter and from the class parents.

Classroom Furniture

As mentioned last week, some classes will be receiving a delivery of new furniture in the holidays. Old desks and storage cupboards are being collected for recycling or as second-hand furniture. Please contact the school office today if you are interested in anything for your home or office.

With Sympathy

I ask that you remember in your prayers Mrs Kathleen Osborne who passed away last week. Kathleen was the grandmother of Gordon (Year 1) and the mother of Danielle, Vanessa and Alison, past students and parents of St Kieran’s.

St Kieran’s Newspaper

The Civics and Citizenship Leadership Team, with the support of Susanne Foale and Ms Bombardieri, produced the first St Kieran’s newspaper aptly titled The Hub Chronicle. The first edition can be found here

Welcome

Mrs Kerrie Anne Foresto has joined the St Kieran’s staff as a Learning Diversity Assistant and will be working with Year 2 for the remainder of the year. Kerrie Ann is a past parent of St Kieran’s. We are very happy to have Kerrie Anne back as part of our school community.

Long Service Leave

I will be taking two weeks leave at the beginning of Term 2 to visit family interstate. During this time Ms Bombardieri will be Acting Principal.

I wish you all a safe, happy and Holy Easter and look forward to seeing you all in Term 2.

Principal
Michael Gallagher

Reviewing Term 1

How wonderful that we’ve come to the end of term and we are able to reflect on our progress!  The students have settled into their new classes, assessments have been carried out and routines of learning have been established.  This term, we held our Parent Teacher Interviews which ensure that parents, students and teachers are all clear on goals that need to be achieved as the year progresses.

The students in Years 3 and 5 completed their NAPLAN Practice Test, in preparation for the NAPLAN Test to be held in Term 2. The NAPLAN “Testing Window” runs from 11 May through to 21 May.  Further information will follow about this.

Our teachers continued their commitment to professional learning during Term 1 by meeting as a staff, on designated afternoons to focus on Data Analysis, Mathematics: Strategies for Growth Point Skill Development & Problem-Solving Strategies. Teachers also worked on Reading practices in English and Visio Divina as well as Cultures of Thinking in Religion.

Schools are busy places and ours is no exception!  Wishing all our families, a restful and joyful break over Easter.
     Marisa Bombardieri, Assistant Principal

Religious Education

Holy Week Liturgies
I would like to thank the students and teachers for preparing and leading such prayerful liturgies for our school community. It was beautiful to see so many parents and friends at our liturgies; thank you for your prayerful attendance.

From a Religious Education point of view, the liturgies are a prayerful reflection of the learning that has taken place over the last few weeks. Each grade has focused on a particular part of our Catholic story relevant to their learning. The students learn the story of their faith, explore the meaning and apply the values, attitudes and beliefs to their lives. All of this culminates in the liturgies we share.

As a proud Catholic school, our Easter journey will continue on the 19 April at 2.15pm when Year 6 students tell the story of the Resurrection.

Yours in Religious Education,

     Mrs Kerrie Wetzlar

GIFT Program Volunteering

Many of you may have previously been involved in the North Harbour Parish social just program, Giving In Faith Together (GIFT), run by Evelyn Paterson.  After 12 months of not being able to prepare meals, GIFT is now able to return to the parish kitchen and start cooking again for our neighbours in need.

GIFT’s mission is to raise awareness of the hidden struggles within our neighbourhood and to offer opportunities for the community to provide support in a spirit of respect, compassion and generosity.

Evening cook-offs will be held every second Wednesday in the parish centre kitchen at Manly Vale, where it takes approximately 2 ½ to 3 hours to prepare around 100 meals.  Due to kitchen availability, there are some cooks that may occur on other days of the week.  Recipes are provided for easy to prepare, family-friendly and nutritious meals.  Ingredients are delivered to the kitchen by Coles Online the morning of the scheduled cook.  Meals are frozen in the parish freezer and collected the same week by the Link Community Food Care Program at Warriewood and supplied free of charge to families in need.  Meals are also made available to St Vincent de Paul, Balgowlah and Manly Vale.  All you need to do is sign up and turn up on the night.  If no one in the group has previously done a cook, the GIFT coordinator is happy to come over on the evening and get you started.

Your class parents will send a message to each group with further instructions on how to register for your year Groups allocated GIFT cook.

A message received from the Link Program: “It is not just the food that blesses, but the knowledge that someone cares for them.”

16 June: Year 3
21 July: Year 4
5 August: Year 5
31 August: Year 6

2021 Premier's Reading Challenge

Congratulations to the 11 students who have already completed the PRC this year! For other students, the school holidays are a great opportunity to catch up on reading and race ahead in the challenge.

The PRC closes for students on Friday August 20, 2021. There is a student site that makes it easier to search for books and enter the books that have been read.

Happy Reading!
